Taking advantage of its vast, flat sandy land, Dong Tien commune has continuously encouraged its residents to actively improve the soil for growing short-term crops to generate income and improve their living standards. With a total vegetable production area of 266 hectares, including 26 hectares of concentrated vegetable growing areas, over 6,000 m² of greenhouse space, and the remainder being household gardens, Dong Tien is considered one of the largest vegetable and fruit producing areas in the province. Many local vegetable and fruit products have reached markets both within and outside the region, such as cucumbers, cantaloupes, carrots, radishes, asparagus, etc. Following the recent storms and floods that damaged and destroyed vegetable crops in many areas, the local people, with a proactive spirit, quickly recovered, restored the soil, and replanted. Currently, in the planned vegetable growing areas, greenhouses, and household gardens, the vegetables are thriving.
Ms. Tran Thi Tan (Bac Van village) shared: “Because we proactively prepared the land and planted early, more than 5 acres of sweet potatoes and cabbage have developed very well. In addition, there are carrots, although a little late, but hopefully they will be ready in time for the Tet market.”
For Mr. Dang The Bau (Thai Yen village), despite suffering significant damage after two storms, he quickly repaired his greenhouse system to resume production.
Reportedly, his greenhouse system covers over 6,000 square meters for growing vegetables such as cucumbers and cantaloupes. With a closed-loop care process and drip irrigation technology, the melons thrive, yielding three harvests per year.
Mr. Dang The Bau said: "After two storms, the greenhouse was severely damaged, and many planting areas were flooded, so I had to invest in repairs to plant the winter crop. Currently, the replanted area is developing very well and is expected to be harvested to supply the market from now until the Lunar New Year."
Currently, taking advantage of the sunny weather, farmers in Dong Tien commune are focusing on important care tasks such as weeding, raising the ridges, supplementing with organic fertilizer, and monitoring for pests and diseases to ensure quality and yield.
Farmers are gradually harvesting many areas of short-term vegetable crops to make way for planting a new crop.
To maintain the brand of traditional vegetable farming and expand market supply capacity, in the coming time, Dong Tien will continue to encourage and support people to apply more scientific and technical methods in cultivation, select more high -economic- value crops, expand production area, build the Dong Tien vegetable and fruit brand, and increase income for the people.
