DTO - Formerly a commune official in Phong Hoa, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Quoi (born in 1956, residing in Tan Quoi hamlet, Phong Hoa commune, Lai Vung district) resigned from his job in 1986 due to family circumstances. Thanks to the knowledge, experience, and relationships he gained while working in Phong Hoa commune, Mr. Quoi boldly switched from rice cultivation to longan farming, gradually bringing a considerable income to his family.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Quoi regularly monitors closely the area of cowhide label production that adheres to safety standards.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Quoi confided: “Seeing that my family's rice production wasn't very efficient, I went to learn from the pioneers in longan cultivation in Vinh Long province. Through research, I determined that the land along the Hau River was suitable for growing perennial fruit trees. Furthermore, after attending training courses on applying technological advancements to agricultural production, I was impressed by Professor, Doctor Vo Tong Xuan's idea that, in addition to agricultural production, if we could research and produce suitable varieties, farmers would have a higher income.”
From then on, Mr. Quoi boldly discussed with his family the conversion of 0.7 hectares of land previously used for rice production to growing longan trees with the aim of selling both the fruit and the seedlings. After purchasing longan seedlings from Vinh Long province, Mr. Quoi began planting them, and the trees grew well. However, at one point, Mr. Quoi's treatment resulted in the trees not bearing fruit, so he went back to the seedling supplier for guidance on the techniques for treating longan trees.
Thanks to his diligent research and learning from nurseries, farmers, and agricultural experts both within and outside the province, Mr. Quoi successfully cultivated and managed his longan trees, resulting in high yields. When the longan trees reached a certain size, in addition to selling the fruit, Mr. Quoi propagated them by grafting branches to sell as seedlings, generating a substantial income. With accumulated capital, Mr. Quoi continued to buy and rent land to plant longan trees, as he already had a readily available source of seedlings. To date, his family's total longan orchard covers over 3 hectares, featuring various longan varieties such as Da Bo, Ido, and Thanh Nhan.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Quoi recounted: “After selling seedlings and longan fruit, some traders from outside the area regularly came to the orchard to buy. Seeing that many people needed to buy, I quoted a fairly high price, but the traders still bought. At one point, with over 3 hectares of land planted with longan trees, selling both fruit and seedlings, I earned more than 1.5 billion VND/year (after deducting expenses). It's worth adding that the price of my longan remains stable thanks to safe production practices...”
Having previously served as an official in Phong Hoa commune, Mr. Quoi consistently showed concern and shared the difficulties faced by local residents, especially those in disadvantaged circumstances. Specifically, he provided seedlings, loans, and technical guidance on longan cultivation to dozens of households in the commune. He also actively contributed resources and funds to build rural roads and concrete bridges, facilitating transportation and the movement of agricultural products for the people. This contributed to socio -economic development, improved the lives of the people, and effectively implemented the National Target Program for New Rural Development in Phong Hoa commune.
With his achievements in agricultural production, Mr. Quoi has been recognized for many years as an outstanding farmer in production and business at the district and provincial levels. In 2021, he received a Certificate of Commendation from the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee for his outstanding achievements in the "Farmers Competing in Excellent Production and Business" movement. In 2022, he continued to receive a Certificate of Commendation from the Prime Minister for his outstanding achievements in the "Farmers Competing in Excellent Production and Business" emulation movement from 2017 to 2021, contributing to the cause of building socialism and defending the Fatherland.
With a pioneering and exemplary spirit, leading the way in movements initiated by the local authorities and higher levels, through meetings and activities of the Farmers' Association branches and groups, Mr. Quoi actively propagated and mobilized farmers to establish Farmers' Clubs, which were enthusiastically received by the people. From there, the "Hoa Tam Farmers' Club" was established, and Mr. Quoi was elected as its Chairman. The Management Board held regular monthly meetings. The meeting content mainly focused on the conversion of crops and livestock according to the provincial agricultural restructuring plan in Phong Hoa commune. In particular, they encouraged farmers to produce according to VietGAP standards to reduce costs and ensure people have access to safe products, guaranteeing the sustainable development of society. |
