"Digitizing" association work
According to the Ca Mau Provincial Farmers' Association, in its journey of "digitalization" along with the rest of the country, 100% of the officials and staff of the provincial farmers' association now use the document management and operational system (iOffice) for their work. The networked computers of the officials and staff have been upgraded to meet work requirements, and 100% of the officials and staff of the association and its branches use email for exchanging work documents.
Officials of the Ca Mau Provincial Farmers' Association manage documents and work files using an electronic document management system and digital signatures.
The association manages documents and work files using an electronic document management system and digital signatures. Online conferences and training sessions are organized via Zoom, Google Meet, etc., saving costs and expanding reach. Association branches at all levels widely utilize social media platforms, websites, Zalo, and Facebook Fanpages to effectively disseminate important information to members. All 64 commune and ward farmers' associations in the province participate in Zalo groups to receive and exchange documents in both directions.
In particular, over the past period, farmers' associations at all levels in the province have actively encouraged members and farmers to install and use the Vietnam Farmers app, bringing many optimal benefits such as: official news about programs of the Central Association, events, seminars, conferences, news about seasons, agricultural products, etc.
Using the app makes it easy to manage the association and its members, allowing officials to approve members online without complicated paperwork. In addition, the Vietnam Farmers app provides members with a Q&A section on legal advice and loan policies. It also offers many other conveniences such as e-wallet payments, weather forecasts and agricultural recommendations, sales collaborators, and shopping utilities.
This is a groundbreaking platform exclusively for members of the Vietnam Farmers' Association . Accordingly, since the beginning of the year, nearly 5,000 members have newly installed the app, bringing the total number of members in the province who have installed and used the app to over 64,000.
Agricultural products go public.
Mr. Tran Van Thuan, Deputy Head of the Farmers' Affairs Committee of the Ca Mau Provincial Farmers' Association, said that in order to support farmers in quickly accessing digital transformation, the provincial farmers' association has coordinated training courses and disseminated information to farmers about digital transformation in accessing information and applying "digitalization" to production, and collaborated with partners to bring agricultural products to e-commerce platforms. To date, more than 20,400 accounts have been opened to enable successful farmers, cooperatives, and professional associations to bring quality products to these platforms.
“After the merger, the provincial farmers' support fund manages over 120 billion VND. This amount has helped over 5,000 households borrow money to develop their economy and invest in effective production models that lack capital. In addition, through mobilizing capital from credit institutions, the association has also introduced capital channels to support farmers in developing production and business with over 1,700 billion VND, reaching more than 50,000 people. As a result, many farmers have developed effective models and adapted well to digital transformation,” Mr. Thuan informed.
Mr. Ho Quoc Trang applies high technology to grow cantaloupe in greenhouses, irrigating it with Israeli drip irrigation on a substrate, and simultaneously "digitizing" sales management on various platforms .
The application of digitalization in production and business, along with the foresight and responsiveness of farmer association members, has brought about new approaches in both production and consumption, as well as product promotion. A prime example is Mr. Ho Quoc Trang (Hamlet 6, Tan Thanh Ward), passionate about agriculture. Through his active research on the internet and learning from various sources, Mr. Trang boldly invested in growing cantaloupe in greenhouses.
Mr. Trang's melon garden uses Israeli drip irrigation technology on a substrate (automatic watering via smartphone-controlled frequency and amount of watering), and uses standard Japanese and Korean varieties that are fragrant and sweet when ripe, making them very popular. In addition to customers buying directly from the garden, Mr. Trang offers home delivery services through Zalo and Facebook.
With three melon gardens totaling 1,500 square meters, harvested in four batches, Mr. Trang earns hundreds of millions of dong in profit annually. Not only does the post office guarantee the purchase of his produce, but he is also continuing to develop VietGap standards to supply supermarkets, while simultaneously transferring his techniques and replicating them with other farmers.
“High-tech production methods help reduce costs, labor, and protect crops from weather impacts, limiting pests and disease-causing insects. This reduces the need for organic fertilizers and biological products, and improves food quality and safety. Because of these characteristics, the garden attracts many visitors for tours and experiences,” Mr. Trang shared.
By livestreaming sales directly on social media platforms, the Dam Doi Crab Cooperative is expanding its market and increasing orders.
While traditional business practices remain prevalent, those who dare to innovate and pioneer the application of digitalization have reaped the rewards. Take the story of businesswoman Tran Thi Xa, Director of the Ba Khia Dam Doi Cooperative (Quach Pham commune). Ms. Xa stated that the cooperative, founded by her and her husband from humble beginnings, aimed to provide consumers with high-quality, beautifully presented, and hygienic salted ba khia crab. The cooperative has invested in machinery, equipment, and production processes according to HACCP standards (a standard that helps businesses and organizations control and limit hazards arising during food production and processing).
Since then, the cooperative's salted crab product is now the only 4-star OCOP product in the province. The brand has won first prize at the provincial and regional Mekong Delta startup competitions and many other awards. Above all, thanks to its acumen in diversifying sales methods on digital platforms, the cooperative's business has grown significantly, expanding not only domestically but also internationally.
"By investing in machinery and technology, the cooperative has been able to produce a large quantity of goods in a shorter time, reduce labor costs, expand its market, and secure valuable orders. For example, with the introduction of a crab washing machine, 1 ton can be washed in just 40 minutes."
This process, along with other processes in the workshop, has been very effective when livestreaming sales on social media platforms. Customers can see the products firsthand, which increases their interest, trust, and leads to more orders… Thanks to this, in some TikTok live sessions, we've sold thousands of jars of crab paste,” Ms. Xa said.
Digital transformation is an inevitable trend today, and every organization, individual, and citizen must participate. Rapid adaptation to digital transformation helps farmers improve product quality, enhance competitiveness, and achieve sustainable development in the digital economy.
