People's Artist Trung Kien was born in 1939 in Kien Xuong, Thai Binh province . He was the son of revolutionary Nguyen Danh Doi.

People's Artist Trung Kien married singer Thanh Nga and they had a son, musician Quoc Trung. For many years, he lived with his second wife, People's Artist and teacher Thu Ha - the daughter of pianist Thai Thi Lien.
