A strong impression
In the flow of Vietnamese music , composer Van Cao is a special symbol. He was born in Lach Tray, Hai Phong. He is the author of "Tien Quan Ca" (Marching Song) - the national anthem of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Many of his other works have transcended time, becoming spiritual symbols of the nation, while also expressing the beauty of the soul and the aspiration for freedom of the Vietnamese people.
When mentioning musicians born in or associated with Hai Phong, one must also include Do Nhuan. He was born in Hoach Trach village, Thai Hoc commune, Binh Giang district, Hai Duong province (now Duong An commune, Hai Phong city). Do Nhuan is one of the representative musicians of Vietnamese revolutionary music and is considered to have laid the foundation for Vietnamese opera. His opera works such as "Co Sao," "Nguoi Tac Tuong," and "Nguyen Trai in Dong Quan"... mark an important development in professional music. Not only rich in artistic merit, Do Nhuan's works also demonstrate profound thought, contributing to shaping the style of revolutionary music composition in many historical periods.
Another name associated with important milestones of the nation is composer Pham Tuyen, from Thuc Khang commune, Binh Giang district, former Hai Duong province (now Hai Phong city). Composer Pham Tuyen is widely known for his song "As if Uncle Ho were present on the day of the great victory." This melody resonated in a special news broadcast on the Voice of Vietnam radio station on the afternoon of April 30, 1975, becoming an iconic sound associated with the historic moment of national reunification. With nearly 700 works spanning many genres, Pham Tuyen is considered one of the composers with a vast body of work, making a significant contribution to Vietnamese revolutionary music.
On a different emotional note, composer Doan Chuan, a son of Cat Hai Island, left his mark with romantic, delicate, and poetic love songs. Songs like "Autumn's Charm" and "Sending the Wind to the Thousand Clouds" have become indelible hallmarks of Vietnamese lyrical music…

From tradition to modernity
According to musician Duy Thai, Chairman of the Hai Phong Music Association, Hai Phong has long been considered a land rich in musical traditions. From generations of pioneering musicians such as Van Cao, Hoang Quy, Doan Chuan, To Vu, Tran Chung, Ngo Thuy Mien… to the younger generation of artists, Hai Phong has always had musical works that are loved by the public and preserved through many generations.
Continuing the creative spirit of previous generations, today's young musicians in Hai Phong are striving to find ways to express their love for their homeland through modern musical language. Many young composers not only create music but also perform, produce musical products, and disseminate their works through digital platforms.
Young musician The Anh Shinichi is one of the prominent figures. His song "Proud of Hai Phong" has a modern feel, combining traditional music with a youthful style, contributing to promoting the image of a dynamic and developing city. The application of digital technology in songwriting, publishing, and promoting music helps young musicians reach the public, especially young audiences, more quickly.
Associate Professor, Doctor, musician Do Hong Quan, President of the Vietnam Union of Literature and Arts Associations, believes that, with the advantage of being a port city with many opportunities for international exchange, in order to integrate deeply, the city should not only focus on songwriting but also pay attention to developing instrumental music and building a force of professional instrumentalists.
