The play "Quang Trung's Great Victory over the Qing Army" recreates the heroic spirit of the spring of 1789, depicting the image of the hero "in simple clothes and carrying a red banner" Quang Trung - Nguyen Hue, along with the swift momentum of the Tay Son rebels in the historic victory at Ngoc Hoi - Dong Da.
This play was newly staged in 1980 by the Nghia Binh Traditional Opera Theatre (now the Gia Lai Provincial Traditional Arts Theatre), directed by Professor Hoang Chuong. In 2015, the theatre revived the play, with Professor Hoang Chuong as director.
To date, the play "Quang Trung's Great Victory over the Qing Army" continues to be staged and improved according to the plan of the Gia Lai Provincial Traditional Arts Theatre, with a production team including: People's Artist Hoang Ngoc Dinh as director, scriptwriter Doan Thanh Tam as script editor, Meritorious Artist Dao Trung Nghia as music editor and orchestra conductor, and choreographer Pham Hoang Viet as the restorer and choreographer of the dance sequences…

The production team will focus on improving the artistic quality of the music, choreography, stage design, costumes, and performance techniques to enhance the show's appeal while preserving the distinctive characteristics of Binh Dinh's traditional opera.

According to Mr. Nguyen Trong Quynh, Director of the Gia Lai Provincial Traditional Arts Theatre, the improved staging of the performance not only contributes to the preservation of traditional art but also helps the current generation of actors inherit the craft and enhance their acting skills.
"The play has been enhanced over 60 performances, with a dress rehearsal scheduled for the end of June 2025. This will contribute to adding more performances for the theater to offer to the public, especially young audiences, helping them to better understand the nation's history and the chivalrous spirit of the Tay Son peasant movement," Mr. Quynh said.

Earlier, on May 4-5, the Gia Lai Provincial Traditional Arts Theatre also staged an enhanced version of the Bài Chòi folk opera "Princess Huyền Trân" (scriptwriters: Đoàn Thanh Ái - Văn Trọng Hùng; director: People's Artist Nguyễn Hoài Huệ).
The play depicts the love story between Princess Huyền Trân (Trần Dynasty) and King Chế Mân (Champa) during a diplomatic marriage between Đại Việt and Champa in the 13th century. The final rehearsal for this play is scheduled for early June 2025.
