A look at the intangible cultural heritage in Binh Duong.

Binh Duong is famous for its thriving industrial zones, located not far from the center of Ho Chi Minh City. However, few people know that Binh Duong also has many national-level cultural heritage sites containing significant economic and cultural values. To date, four intangible cultural heritage sites in Binh Duong have been recognized: "Tuong Binh Hiep Lacquerware Craft," "Binh Duong Pottery Craft," "Tan Khanh Ba Tra Martial Arts," and "Tan An Temple Ky Yen Festival." 1. The lacquerware craft of Tuong Binh Hiep

When mentioning traditional crafts in Binh Duong, it's impossible to overlook Tuong Binh Hiep lacquerware village. This is a traditional craft village with a history spanning hundreds of years, and it continues to be passed down through many generations to this day.

What makes Tuong Binh Hiep lacquerware village stand out is the value of its rustic, ancient, and traditional East Asian beauty. Each artwork not only achieves high quality but also ensures aesthetic appeal with delicate, smooth lines in every detail, earning the love and appreciation of many international friends.

On April 6, 2016, the Tuong Hiep Binh lacquerware craft was officially recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as an intangible cultural heritage in Binh Duong province according to Decision No. 1328/QD-BVHTTDL .

2. Traditional pottery craft of Binh Duong

Beginning in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Binh Duong pottery was widely accepted and highly favored by people throughout the six provinces of Southern Vietnam. Not only was it of good quality and versatile in its applications, but Binh Duong ceramics were also highly valued for their aesthetics, shapes, colors, and patterns.

Despite numerous historical upheavals, this traditional craft has not yet been fully restored to its former glory. However, several traditional pottery villages in Binh Duong still exist, working to rebuild and develop the industry. On November 23, 2021, the traditional pottery craft of Binh Duong was included in the list of cultural heritage in Binh Duong by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism , promising even stronger development in the future to revive this traditional craft.

3. Folk performing arts of Vo Lam Tan Khanh Ba Tra

Tan Khanh Ba Tra martial arts, or simply Tan Khanh Ba Tra, is a system of martial arts belonging to traditional Vietnamese martial arts. Its unique feature is that its origins trace back to Binh Dinh, one of the cradles of Vietnamese martial arts.

After undergoing refinement and improvement over many generations in its new land, Tan Khanh Ba Tra is now not only a cultural heritage of Binh Duong , but also recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage. It is also the second martial art to receive this title, after Binh Dinh martial arts.

On November 23, 2021, the folk knowledge and folk performing arts of Tan Khanh Ba Tra martial arts were included in the list of national intangible cultural heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

4. Ky Yen Festival at Tan An Temple

The Ky Yen festival at Tan An communal house in Thu Dau Mot city is a festival that originated alongside the process of land reclamation and settlement from the beginning of the 19th century. Even after more than 200 years, this festival is still held annually from the 14th to the 16th of November in the lunar calendar, to commemorate the ancestors who contributed to the reclamation of land and the establishment of the village.

Even today, Tan An communal house still preserves the architectural style and aesthetics of an old Southern Vietnamese communal house, along with most of the traditional cultural activities and worship rituals of a village communal house. It is also where the Royal Decree of Emperor Tu Duc is still preserved.

On July 21, 2022, the "Ky Yen Festival at Tan An communal house" was recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as a national intangible cultural heritage .

Preserving and developing intangible cultural heritage in Binh Duong not only has historical significance but also develops economic potential and plays an important role in the development of tourism in the province.
