(NLĐO) - Thousands of vehicles lined up, causing prolonged traffic congestion due to the bottleneck at Gianh Bridge. Quang Binh traffic police had to work hard to regulate and redirect traffic.

The volume of vehicles traveling into Ho Chi Minh City and the southern provinces after Tet caused serious traffic congestion at Gianh Bridge.

On February 1-2, the Traffic Police Department of Quang Binh Provincial Police announced that traffic congestion on Gianh Bridge began around 11:00 AM that day.

The congestion is caused by the overload of vehicles returning to Ho Chi Minh City and the southern provinces after the Lunar New Year. Meanwhile, the Gianh Bridge only has two lanes, making it difficult for vehicles to move across.

To alleviate traffic congestion, the traffic police deployed 10 officers and soldiers to the scene. These included teams from the Traffic Police Department of Quang Binh Provincial Police, the police of Bac Trach commune, Bo Trach district, and the police of Ba Don town, who coordinated to regulate and guide traffic and ensure traffic safety.

At the scene, thousands of vehicles were crammed together, moving slowly along a 500-meter stretch leading to Gianh Bridge. Many drivers impatiently honked their horns, while motorcyclists struggled to weave their way through the dense stream of cars. Some trucks carrying heavy loads moved inch by inch due to the narrowed road, further exacerbating the traffic congestion.

Every year, before and after the Lunar New Year, the Gianh Bridge frequently experiences traffic congestion, causing gridlock.

Traffic police officers were deployed to work tirelessly under the midday sun to regulate traffic and proactively divert traffic from a distance to reduce pressure on the bridge area. However, due to the extremely large volume of vehicles, clearing the congestion still proved quite difficult.

Many locals witnessed the traffic jam and shook their heads in frustration. "Every year, around and after Tet (Lunar New Year), the Gianh Bridge gets completely gridlocked like this. We just hope the new bridge is completed soon to ease the suffering," shared Mr. Nguyen Van T., a truck driver on the North-South route.

Before the Lunar New Year, traffic congestion on Gianh Bridge in the South-North direction is a frequent occurrence, especially during peak hours in the last days of the year.

Gianh Bridge - a traffic bottleneck in North Central Vietnam

Gianh Bridge is a vital bridge on National Highway 1, located in Quang Binh province. It is considered a "bottleneck" on the North-South route due to its narrow width, which is disproportionate to the expansion of National Highway 1. Currently, while National Highway 1 has been upgraded to four lanes, the two ends and the bridge deck of Gianh Bridge only have two lanes, hindering traffic flow and posing a potential traffic safety risk.

In response to this situation, the Ministry of Transport has approved the project to build a new Gianh Bridge to address the traffic congestion problem. The project starts at Km624+799 (in Ba Don town) and ends at Km626+901 (Ha Trach commune, Bo Trach district). The new bridge is nearly 750m long, designed with a road width of 12m, including 2 lanes for motorized vehicles and 2 lanes for non-motorized vehicles, promising to improve traffic capacity in the future.

Currently, the project is in the process of constructing the bored piles. It is expected that after the Lunar New Year holiday, the project management board will mobilize maximum manpower and equipment to accelerate progress on the foundation, pier body, and cantilever construction phases, aiming to complete the new Gianh Bridge as soon as possible and resolve the long-standing traffic congestion in the area.
