Changes in the Máng Diệc valley

The massacre at Mang Diec Valley in 1970 claimed the lives of 72 people, including civilians and liberation army soldiers. This is a painful and unforgettable memory for the people of Hamlet 4, Tri Phai Commune, Thoi Binh District. After 50 years of liberation, with the attention of the Party and the State, and the determination of the people here to overcome the pain, the appearance of Mang Diec Valley is increasingly improving.

During the resistance war, the Máng Diệc swamp area was overgrown with mangroves and reeds. In early 1970, local troops from Thới Bình district were stationed at Công Nghiệp Canal and Si Ðo Canal in Hamlet 10, bordering Hamlet 4, Trí Phải commune. Many leading cadres, regular troops, and local militia were brought to Máng Diệc swamp for treatment. In March 1970, the US-backed South Vietnamese forces conducted numerous search-and-destroy operations using infantry and helicopters to eliminate the liberation forces. On March 17, 1970, enemy aircraft unexpectedly bombed the Máng Diệc swamp area, killing 72 people, including civilians and liberation forces.

To commemorate the victims of the massacre, Ca Mau province built a memorial monument covering an area of 684 m², completed in 2012. In 2015, the site of the massacre by the US-backed South Vietnamese forces at Mang Diec Valley was classified as a provincial-level historical and cultural relic.

Fifty years after liberation, the Mang Diec hamlet has undergone many positive changes. The once sparsely populated, impoverished village has become significantly more prosperous, with sturdy, well-built houses standing side by side; the people are actively participating in local movements, building a cultural life as well as developing advanced new rural areas.

Currently, the lives of the people in Lung Mang Diec have improved significantly since the construction of a 3-meter wide, 4,000-meter long road connecting National Highway 63 to the Memorial Monument, and the addition of electricity. In particular, Hamlet 4 is receiving investment for the construction of a 1,000-meter long, 2.5-meter wide road connecting to smaller branches of the hamlet, facilitating transportation and economic development for the residents. Over 80% of households are considered well-off, with an average per capita income of 73 million VND. Many effective economic models exist, such as shrimp-rice farming; raising crabs, fish, pigs, chickens, and ducks; and fruit tree cultivation, generating incomes of 250-400 million VND per household per year. Only one household remains poor in the entire hamlet.

Mr. Nguyen Van Lap, a resident of Mang Diec hamlet, shared: “Life has improved many times compared to before. The roads are clear, children can go to school easily, and people can do business more conveniently. We people are very happy.”

Mr. Dang Van Luom, Permanent Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Tri Phai Commune, said: “The people of Hamlet 4 in particular, and Tri Phai Commune in general, deeply hated the US-puppet regime, and therefore were determined to fight, contributing with the whole country to the great victory of Spring 1975, completely liberating the South and unifying the country. As the homeland and country entered the reconstruction phase, the lives of the people in the Mang Diec area were very difficult. With the attention of the Party and the State, investment in infrastructure projects and the implementation of various movements, the lives of the people have gradually improved.”
