Mr. Huan’s farm is located deep in Kim Tan village, Huy Bac commune. Several rows of modern cages are built next to each other, covering a large area of land. Inside the cages, Mr. Huan invested in ventilation and air conditioning systems for the bamboo rat cages. Thousands of bamboo rats grow well and provide a steady income.

In 2013, Mr. Huan bought some bamboo rats for breeding. Unexpectedly, after just over 10 years, this bamboo rat herd has grown to several thousand. Currently, Mr. Huan is raising about 600 bamboo rats for breeding and several thousand commercial bamboo rats.

According to Mr. Huan, food for bamboo rats is easy to find, such as elephant grass, sugarcane, bamboo stems. They are almost disease-free. Each year, a female bamboo rat gives birth to 3 litters, each litter of 2-5 babies.

Currently, in Mr. Huan's farm, there are 2 types of bamboo rats: peach-cheeked bamboo rats and moldy bamboo rats. Both of these breeds grow and bring high income. The selling price of bamboo rats ranges from 500,000 - 800,000 VND/kg. Mr. Huan also grows 1 hectare of elephant grass and sugarcane to feed the bamboo rats.

During the process of raising bamboo rats, Mr. Huan also discovered an interesting thing: some bamboo rats that have been crossbred for many generations have white fur. Mr. Huan calls them white bamboo rats. The ones with white fur always sell for 3 to 4 times higher than the normal bamboo rats.

"Many people see that bamboo rats have beautiful fur, so they buy them as pets. Realizing this need, I have taken the trouble to research and find a way to make bamboo rats give birth to many babies with white fur," Mr. Huan confided.

Pointing at the bamboo rat cage, Mr. Huan could not hide his joy: "Everyone loves the white bamboo rat. They look so beautiful that many people want to buy them as pets. Instead of selling them for meat, bamboo rats with white fur can be sold for many times more."

Realizing the potential of breeding white-furred rats, he has researched and thoroughly applied it in crossbreeding. According to Mr. Huan, by creating the F2 and F3 generations, he has a breed of rats that specializes in producing white-furred rats. Crossbreeding requires meticulousness and perseverance. Up to now, he has mastered the crossbreeding process to produce white-furred rats.

Sharing about the method of producing white bamboo rats, Mr. Huan did not hide: "Take a male white bamboo rat and cross it with a female bamboo rat. The F1 generation of offspring has normal fur color like the mother because white is a recessive gene and bamboo is a dominant gene.

Letting the F1 generation breed together will produce both white and normal furred rats. Then, letting the hybrid generations mate will produce both white furred rats (white rats) and normal furred rats.

According to Mr. Huan, bamboo rats are gentle and very clean. Their droppings are odorless and dry. Food is easy to find, so raising bamboo rats as "pets" will have great prospects.

Since discovering this, Mr. Huan has never had enough bamboo rats to sell. Every one that is available for sale is immediately ordered by customers.

Currently, each year, Mr. Huan's bamboo rat farm sells about 4,000 bamboo rat breeds, at a price of over 1 million VND each, giving his family a huge source of income.
