In an interview with NBC News broadcast on June 19 (local time), Obama questioned the effectiveness and strategic basis of the war the Trump administration is waging against Tehran.
"We've been through a war, it cost billions of dollars, it put the military under immense pressure. Many people died. And now, it feels like we're back in the same place we were before the war started, maybe even a little worse," Obama remarked.
These remarks were made when Obama spoke with NBC ahead of the official opening of the Obama Presidential Center, and was asked to comment on the recently signed memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the US and Iran.
The former president said he welcomed the ceasefire reached by both sides after months of conflict.
"I am pleased to see a ceasefire established and I hope it will be maintained," he said.
However, he also expressed skepticism about what the war had actually accomplished. Obama reiterated that in the nuclear agreement signed under his administration, Iran had accepted commitments to prevent the development of nuclear weapons.
"Under that agreement, Iran agreed not to develop nuclear weapons," he said.
The former president argued that the Trump administration's decision to withdraw from the agreement contributed to the resurgence of Iran's nuclear program.
"This administration, or a previous version of it, withdrew from the agreement, and that allowed Iran to further develop its nuclear capabilities," Obama stated.
In 2018, during his first term, President Trump withdrew the United States from the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and a group of world powers.
This document outlines a roadmap spanning over 25 years with a series of controls aimed at limiting Tehran's ability to develop or possess nuclear weapons.
Meanwhile, the new memorandum signed between the US and Iran following the recent conflict has not fully resolved the future of Tehran's nuclear program – one of the core issues of contention between the two sides.
President Trump signed the document during a dinner at the Palace of Versailles in France on June 18. According to the agreement, negotiators have 60 days to reach a more comprehensive and lasting deal to end the conflict.
According to the former president, America is currently going through a period of great upheaval and political polarization.
"There is no denying that we are living in a time of profound upheaval and division," he observed.
He said he understood the anxieties of many Americans who felt that democracy, civic norms, and social consensus were gradually eroding.
"Many people feel like our democracy, our civic habits and values, and the way we treat each other, are beginning to crumble," he said.
Obama stated that the Obama Presidential Center and its accompanying museum are not intended to glorify the past, but rather to inspire a sense of civic responsibility in every American citizen.
"I hope this place will remind people not of the past, but of the things that always exist within each of us," he said.
According to the former president, every citizen has a responsibility to participate in political life and ensure that the government system functions effectively.
"We all have the capacity to feel a sense of civic responsibility to ensure that the government functions properly," he emphasized.
