According to Reuters, on June 3, Thailand's Justice Minister confirmed that former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra would be released, ending the remainder of his sentence earlier than expected thanks to a royal amnesty.
Mr. Thaksin was released early on May 11 after serving eight months of a one-year prison sentence on corruption-related charges.
Under the terms of his parole, he must wear an electronic monitoring bracelet and be under probation for four months.
The Royal Gazette of Thailand announced on the evening of June 2nd that King Maha Vajiralongkorn had granted amnesty to a select number of prisoners, in celebration of Queen Suthida's birthday on June 3rd.
Accordingly, those currently on parole will have their remaining sentence reduced by one-third, while those who meet the criteria under Article 8 will be released completely.
Article 8 applies to prisoners whose remaining prison sentences are no more than one year from the date the decree takes effect.
When asked whether Thaksin was on the list of those eligible for amnesty, Justice Minister Rutthaphon Naowarat confirmed to reporters that he was.
Mr. Thaksin is eligible for full release because he is serving a suspended sentence and has less than a year remaining in his prison term.
However, Rutthaphon said there were still some administrative procedures to be completed before the former prime minister could be officially released and the electronic monitoring system removed.
Mr. Thaksin (76 years old), who returned to Thailand in August 2023 after more than 15 years in exile, was sentenced to a total of eight years in prison. Just hours after being detained, he was transferred to a hospital due to heart and chest problems.
The sentence was later reduced to one year thanks to royal clemency. The former Thai Prime Minister spent six months receiving treatment in the hospital before being released.
Last year, the Supreme Court ordered Thaksin's return to prison, ruling that his prolonged hospitalization was not entirely justified and that the remainder of his sentence must be served in prison.
