Iranian state media reported that the country's delegation in Switzerland had lodged a protest with the US after President Donald Trump issued threats against negotiators.

Iran's Press TV channel reported on X that the delegation was considering options for responding to Trump's verbal threats.

In a call with Fox News today, Trump threatened to "take over" the Strait of Hormuz if no deal is reached with Iran.

He warned Iranian officials: "If you close this strait, you will lose your entire country..." CNN contacted the White House for clarification on the exact meaning of this statement.

Negotiations amidst threats

On the afternoon of June 21 (local time), US and Iranian delegations began negotiations in Switzerland on the agreement to end the war that the two countries signed this week, according to CNN.

The main topics of discussion included the war in Lebanon, the Strait of Hormuz, and Iran's nuclear program.

US Vice President JD Vance held a press conference at the site of the US-Iran talks, stating that President Donald Trump had given the US delegation the authority to seek a diplomatic solution to a range of issues.

"Never before in history have Iranian and American leaders met at such a high level," Vance began.

In a press conference ahead of talks with Iran, Vance blamed Tehran, calling it a "destabilizing agent in the region."

However, he said the parties had made “very significant” progress in the past few hours.

According to Mr. Vance, the two countries are seeing “a shared future where everyone can work together to promote peace and prosperity.”

He also said that President Trump had asked the US delegation to “open a new chapter” in transforming relations with the Iranian people.

The US Vice President asserted that the US has done “more than any other government in the world in the past few months” to end the conflict in Lebanon.

"Peace is never easy. Peace always requires effort, and all parties must make certain concessions," he said.

The negotiations took place at the Bürgenstock resort with the participation of mediators from Qatar and Pakistan.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf were both present at the meeting.

Iran enters negotiations with a strong hand.

Ahead of the talks, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei declared in Switzerland: "We will push for the implementation of commitments from our partners and clarify how they will fulfill their obligations. If any part of the commitment is not fulfilled, the entire agreement will be in trouble."

Mr. Baghaei emphasized that the US needs to implement the necessary measures soon, otherwise it will harm the agreement.

On the same day, June 21, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian provided further details about the agreement with the US, stating that $6 billion in frozen assets currently held by Qatar would be returned under the preliminary agreement with the US.

"Most of the provisions in the memorandum of understanding are beneficial to us, and the results of these dialogues and negotiations will soon become clear," Tasnim news agency quoted Pezeshkian as saying.

President Pezeshkian declared that the country would not relinquish its right to enrich uranium, but also pledged not to pursue the goal of developing nuclear weapons.

"The U.S. is demanding that Iran not build an atomic bomb. This is nothing new, and we can state in writing that Iran has no intention of building one. However, we are not giving up our right to enrich uranium, and the other side will have no choice but to accept this right," Pezeshkian added.

Iran also stated that the ongoing fighting in Lebanon between Israel and Hezbollah would be a central topic in the Iran-US talks in Switzerland.

"The Zionist regime continues to violate its commitments in Lebanon. This will be the main topic of discussion in today's talks," said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei.

Tehran asserts its sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz and declares it will tighten control over maritime activities there.

As a vital shipping lane for the majority of the world's crude oil, the Strait of Hormuz remains Iran's most important physical deterrent.

By gaining control of energy supplies combined with undersea fiber optic cable infrastructure – the "nerve center" of the digital economy – Tehran is forcing the US and other major powers to think carefully.

In fact, previous lockdowns in Hormuz have driven energy prices to record levels, causing serious instability for the global economy.
