Peru has its first elected female president.

Keiko Fujimori won the 2026 Peruvian presidential election, becoming the first female president directly elected by the country's people. This result marks a historic milestone for Peruvian politics and brings the Fujimori family back to power after more than two decades.

Right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori won the Peruvian presidential election after a close race against left-wing opponent Roberto Sánchez.

According to the nearly complete vote count, Fujimori received approximately 50.1% of the vote, while left-wing candidate Roberto Sánchez received 49.865%. This victory makes Keiko Fujimori the first female president to be directly elected by the people of Peru.

Previously, Peru had its first female president, Dina Boluarte, but she came to power in 2022 through a succession arrangement after President Pedro Castillo was impeached by Congress , rather than through a presidential election.

This is Keiko Fujimori's fourth time running for president, following three consecutive defeats in 2011, 2016, and 2021. She is the daughter of former President Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000).

She follows a conservative line, supports a market economy, is committed to a tough stance on crime, strengthening security, and promoting closer ties with the United States. In her 2026 election campaign, security and crime prevention were central to her message.

Keiko Fujimori's new term is scheduled to begin on July 28. According to Reuters, the new president will face numerous challenges, from rising crime and a polarized political landscape to building consensus within a fragmented parliament after years of political instability.
