According to a press release, with 134 votes in favor in the 200-seat Parliament, Jussi Halla-aho officially became the new Speaker of the Finnish Parliament. Traditionally, this position is held by a member of parliament from the second-largest party in Parliament. Following the elections on April 2nd, the Finns Party became the second-largest party in Parliament with 46 seats.
With the Speaker of the Finnish Parliament and members of the cabinet being sworn into office, the new Finnish Parliament and government have officially come into operation more than two months after the elections.
Jussi Halla-aho was born in 1971. He served as Chairman of the Finns Party from 2017 to 2021. He was a Member of Parliament from 2011 to 2014 and, from July 2019 to the present, was also a member of the European Parliament from 2014 to 2019.
The Finnish Parliament has the power to pass bills based on government proposals, MPs' petitions, or citizen initiatives. On June 21st, under the leadership of Mr. Halla-aho, the Finnish Parliament began debating the Government Programme proposed by the new cabinet on June 16th.
