On the afternoon of January 2nd, the inter-agency inspection team No. 1 of Hanoi City on food safety inspected the work of ensuring food safety during Tet (Lunar New Year).

During an on-site inspection at the Nguyen Ninh traditional rice cake production facility (located at 11 Hang Than Street, Ba Dinh District), the inspection team discovered a series of food safety violations.

Accordingly, at the time of inspection, the Nguyen Ninh rice cake production facility had 5 production workers and 1 owner.

Upon inspection, the facility's production area was found to be utilizing the family's living kitchen, lacking separate zones, haphazardly arranged, and severely dilapidated. The kitchen floor was peeling, damp, and moldy, with open drains and accumulated garbage.

Inside, the inspection team also discovered clothes being washed and dried right in the production area. The equipment used for preliminary processing and preparation was filthy due to the lack of regular cleaning.

Notably, the toilets were located right in the food preparation and processing area. Insects and animal feces were also found in the production area.

Because the facility was cramped and lacked storage space, sacks of dried rice flake ingredients were stacked right at the entrance to the kitchen, near the damp, moldy wall...

In addition, upon reviewing the legal documents, the establishment failed to present health certificates and confirmation of food safety training for the owner and 5 employees.

The facility also failed to provide documentation proving the origin of all ingredients, food additives, and packaging materials that come into direct contact with food.

In addition, the inspection team also discovered that the labels on the rice cakes did not conform to the product declaration and did not comply with regulations on product labeling.

Based on the aforementioned violations, the inspection team requested the facility to temporarily cease operations to immediately rectify the shortcomings.

At the same time, the Ba Dinh District Food Safety Steering Committee is tasked with continuing its work to handle violations and report the results to Inter-agency Inspection Team No. 1 before January 10, 2025.

The inspection team also took two samples of cakes, namely sticky rice cakes and mung bean cakes, for quality standard testing.

Four inter-agency food safety inspection teams will be deployed during the Tet holiday.

Previously, the Hanoi People's Committee issued a decision to establish four inter-agency food safety inspection teams for the 2025 Tet holiday. Three of these teams are headed by leaders from the Departments of Health, Agriculture and Rural Development, and Industry and Trade, while one team is headed by a leader from the City Market Management Department.

The inspections will focus on food production, processing, trading, and import facilities, wholesale markets, supermarkets, shopping malls, food service establishments, and street food vendors.

The focus of the inspection will be on production, business, and import facilities dealing with food items widely consumed during the Lunar New Year (Year of the Snake) and other festivals, such as: meat, meat products, beer, wine, alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, cakes, jams, candies, vegetables, fruits, food additives, and food service establishments…
