Sustainable development of the wood processing industry

The People's Committee of Thai Nguyen province has recently issued a directive on strengthening state management of wood production and processing activities in the area. This document aims to address existing issues related to land, construction, environment, and the management of forest product origins. Through this, the province is orienting itself towards gradually restructuring the wood processing industry in a systematic and modern way, increasing added value and economic efficiency, and moving towards sustainable development in the coming period.

The directive was issued amidst the rapid development of the province's wood processing industry, with over 800 businesses, cooperatives, and household businesses currently operating. Some products, such as plywood, wooden chopsticks, and disposable wooden items, have entered the export market, creating jobs and contributing to the local budget.

However, behind this growth, many problems still persist. These include factories built without complying with land, construction, and environmental regulations; fragmented production activities; lax in invoice and document reporting; and weak links between raw material sources and processing plants.

This directive goes beyond simply requiring increased inspections and enforcement of violations; it also sets out a direction for restructuring and developing the wood processing industry towards a more modern and sustainable approach. Accordingly, the province prioritizes attracting large-scale projects with modern, environmentally friendly technologies; and gradually reduces the number of rudimentary processing facilities that employ a large number of unskilled laborers.

In addition, the province aims to form a linked chain from forest planting and harvesting to processing and product consumption in order to increase added value, instead of mainly selling raw materials or semi-processed products .

The directive also clearly assigns responsibilities to each sector, locality, and unit. The Department of Industry and Trade is responsible for trade promotion, export support, and the development of wood processing industrial clusters; the Agriculture and Environment sector focuses on building and developing raw material areas, sustainable forest management, and controlling the origin of forest products; the tax authorities strengthen control over invoices and documents; and the police force emphasizes fire safety and prevention.

The Chairman of the People's Committee at the commune level shall be held responsible if new wood processing facilities are established that do not meet the conditions regarding investment, land, environment, and construction.

The most noticeable impact of the directive is the pressure it puts on production facilities to gradually standardize their operations. For businesses with well-planned investments, this could be an opportunity to expand production, access export markets, and participate more deeply in the supply chain. However, for small-scale businesses, especially household-scale ones, a suitable roadmap and support mechanisms for transformation are needed.

In the long term, putting the wood processing industry on a systematic development path is a practical requirement. As export markets increasingly tighten standards on the legality of wood origin, environmental protection, and labor practices, the limitations of small-scale, fragmented production models will become increasingly apparent.

And what's important now is not just inspecting and handling violations, but helping businesses and people see the long-term direction of Thai Nguyen's wood industry, which is to develop more sustainably and bring higher economic value.
