Sustainable development of OCOP products

Việt NamViệt Nam19/03/2024

With its unique topography and climate, Thanh Hoa boasts a wealth of distinctive regional products and specialties. In implementing the One Commune One Product (OCOP) program, Thanh Hoa prioritizes ensuring product quality linked to local advantages, thereby promoting market connections and fostering sustainable development for each product.

With the goal of developing the rural economy by leveraging local resources and increasing the value of key products, from the very beginning of the OCOP program, Thanh Hoa province has prioritized product quality, linking it with the development of potential, advantages, and even the cultural characteristics and production customs of local people. After more than 5 years of implementation, the province has 479 OCOP products, becoming one of the leading provinces in the country in terms of the number of OCOP products. Along with this, each locality and producer has focused on building raw material areas, investing in modern machinery and equipment, and applying current quality standards, resulting in many products being highly valued by the market.

In implementing the OCOP program, Hoang Hoa district prioritizes funding to encourage organizations and individuals. Along with this, the district always focuses on coordinating with relevant units to organize training courses and disseminate information about OCOP; supporting the introduction and promotion of OCOP products. Simultaneously, it focuses on supporting trade connections to gradually build product value chains, improve quality, expand scale, and enhance the competitiveness of OCOP products. As a result, many OCOP products from Hoang Hoa district have become popular with consumers inside and outside the province, notably: Le Gia fish sauce and shrimp paste; Ba Hao fish sauce; Bao An wild sim wine; Thuat Yen beef sausage; Huy Thu sticky rice cake; Minh Truong cordyceps...

By March 2024, Hoang Hoa district had developed 35 OCOP products, including 32 products achieving 3 stars, 2 products achieving 4 stars, and 1 product achieving 5 stars. Ms. Vu Thi Mai, owner of Tan Mai fish sauce production facility in Hoang Phu commune, shared: “Since Tan Mai fish sauce and some other fish sauce and fermented fish products from Khuc Phu village received OCOP certification, people have felt very secure in their craft and focused on investing in modern machinery and technology for production. Currently, products from Khuc Phu village are consumed in most provinces and cities nationwide and are promoted in many large-scale trade programs. OCOP certification is one of the support mechanisms for local people to increase their income and feel secure in preserving and committing to their craft.”

In reality, most of the province's OCOP products are developed on a small scale, lacking the potential to expand and promote a distribution system. Therefore, based on the province's guidance and support, and the proactive investment of economic sectors, the entire province now has about 20 points and stores to introduce and sell OCOP products. Simultaneously, businesses have proactively brought OCOP products onto e-commerce platforms. Accordingly, about 95% of OCOP products are introduced and sold on e-commerce platforms such as postmart.vn, voso.vn, Shopee, Lazada, Alibaba, and social media platforms like Facebook, Zalo, and TikTok. In particular, with the goal of elevating the market status of OCOP products, departments, sectors, and localities have regularly directed and guided businesses to improve and upgrade existing products through consulting, training, and experience sharing activities. At the same time, focus on building supply chain linkage projects for key OCOP products, contributing to increasing economic value and building brands for products in particular and the OCOP product ecosystem of Thanh Hoa in general.

To develop OCOP products sustainably, building on the achievements already made, Thanh Hoa province continues to focus on transferring and applying technological advancements in the production and processing of OCOP products, protecting intellectual property rights, designing labels, packaging, codes, and ensuring product traceability. The province will strengthen support for OCOP businesses and entities to develop and improve products, standardize documentation, and facilitate the integration of OCOP products into modern distribution channels, retail systems, and distribution points. Simultaneously, it will promote trade and product introduction through various media channels, and enhance networking and exchange at trade fairs both within and outside the province. This will improve the competitiveness and economic value of OCOP products.
