Economic value exceeding 7 trillion VND.

Located north of the capital, Me Linh district is considered the largest flower and ornamental plant growing hub in Hanoi . On average, each season, the flower farms here supply the market with millions of flowers of various types such as roses, chrysanthemums, lilies, gerberas, and tens of thousands of potted ornamental plants.

Along with Me Linh district, four other districts and counties, namely Bac Tu Liem, Dan Phuong, Tay Ho, and Thuong Tin, are also major flower-growing areas in Hanoi. These five districts alone account for nearly 70% of the total area dedicated to flower and ornamental plant cultivation in the entire city.

The flower and ornamental plant industry generates over 7 trillion VND in value annually.
The flower and ornamental plant industry generates over 7 trillion VND in value annually.

According to Nguyen Van Chi, head of the Hanoi Rural Development Department, statistics show that the entire city currently has over 8,000 hectares dedicated to growing flowers and ornamental plants, mainly concentrated in suburban areas. The value generated from flowers and ornamental plants in recent years has exceeded 7,000 billion VND.

“With new advancements in varieties, cultivation processes, mineral nutrient systems, automatic irrigation, light and temperature regulation, the productivity of flowers and ornamental plants is now quite high. The average production value reaches 0.5 - 1.5 billion VND/ha/year; many models achieve up to 2.2 billion VND/ha/year…” - Mr. Nguyen Van Chi shared.

While yielding significant economic value, the flower and ornamental plant cultivation industry still faces numerous challenges and limitations. One of the current concerns is the scarcity of large-scale, high-tech flower cultivation models in Hanoi, spanning 20 hectares or more.

Continue expanding the flower and ornamental plant growing area.

According to the Hanoi Rural Development Department, the city has so far established 47 concentrated flower and ornamental plant production areas with a total area of over 1,800 hectares and an average size of 10-20 hectares per area.

Areas specializing in flower and ornamental plant cultivation are mainly concentrated in the districts of Bac Tu Liem, Tay Ho, Me Linh, Dan Phuong, Thuong Tin, Gia Lam, etc. Of these, the area for growing high-quality flowers accounts for more than 30% and is continuing to expand.

According to Nguyen Xuan Dai, Director of the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the city has identified flowers and ornamental plants as a key economic sector. Therefore, it recently issued a plan for the development of flower and ornamental plant production, aiming to expand the cultivated area by 60-80 hectares per year.

According to a representative from the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, with the newly issued plan, the city aims to maintain an average annual growth rate of 10% in the value of ornamental plant production from now until 2030. The value of flower and ornamental plant production is projected to reach approximately 10,000 billion VND in 2025 and between 15,000 and 20,000 billion VND by 2030.

In the coming period, based on the tasks assigned by the Hanoi People's Committee, the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will actively coordinate with relevant departments and localities to focus on implementing comprehensive and effective solutions. The agricultural sector expects the project to continue to strongly shift the crop structure, aiming to increase income for producers and improve the cultural and spiritual life of the people of Hanoi.

“The development of the flower and ornamental plant industry will contribute to preserving traditional landscapes, green spaces, historical sites, and creating green spaces in the urban areas of the Capital…” - Director of the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development , Nguyen Xuan Dai .
