Over the past month, Korean films and Hollywood blockbusters have taken turns topping the Vietnamese box office. Meanwhile, newly released domestic films such as "Rescue the Teacher" and "Culi Never Cries" have failed to gain attention from audiences, hitting theaters with very low revenue.
This week, the rankings of Box Office Vietnam (independent box office watcher) sees comedy on the rise Laughter Across Borders from Korea. The project not only knocked down many Vietnamese movies but also surpassed Hollywood blockbusters to lead the weekend revenue.
On the contrary, two newly released Vietnamese films are Save the teacher and Coolie Never Cries was not warmly received by the audience, ticket sales were very slow. This is also the fourth week that a Vietnamese film has not been able to top the box office chart, extending its series of consecutive failures at home.
Korean movies win again
Laughter Across Borders (International title: Amazon Bullseye ) is a comedy that attracts attention when it gathers a star-studded cast including Ryu Seung Ryong, Go Kyung Po, Jin Seon Kyu, Yeom Hye Ran.

The work attracted audiences when released in Vietnamese theaters thanks to a good promotion strategy. The film's name is familiar, plus the appearance of Go Kyung Po - the star. Next to Laughter across borders, There is a Korean movie that also made it into the top 5 of the chart. Two school friends in love. The comedy-romance project brings together two stars Kim Go Eun and Steve Sanghyun Noh, which created quite a good effect when it debuted at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival.
The film initially did not attract audiences in Vietnamese theaters, but gradually gained popularity thanks to word-of-mouth on social media. The film earned more than VND2.1 billion over the three-day weekend, bringing its total revenue to nearly VND9 billion.
Hollywood blockbusters are not outstanding yet
In its second week in theaters, the blockbuster Red One: Code Red no longer held the top position in the revenue rankings but fell to second place, reaching more than 2.8 billion VND.
The project, which brings together a star-studded cast including Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans, Lucy Liu, Kiernan Shipka..., has yet to score points because of its outdated script and outdated character development.
The story of rescuing Santa Claus brings viewers a joyful Christmas atmosphere but lacks depth in message and meaning.
To date, the film has grossed VND16 billion in Vietnamese theaters and USD38 million internationally. This achievement is truly disappointing, causing the project to fall into a situation of heavy losses because the budget was up to USD250 million - among the most expensive blockbusters of all time when production was announced.
Contrary to expectations, the blockbuster Gladiator 2 had a poor opening in the Vietnamese market. The film only earned more than 2.1 billion VND in the last three days of the weekend, ranking third on the chart of Box Office Vietnam .
This is the sequel to the blockbuster that rocked the box office in 2000, won five Oscars and made Russell Crowe an A-list star in Hollywood.
The film did not attract audiences because its content was completely new, not reminiscent of the first part even though Ridley Scott was still in the director's chair. Returning after 24 years, the story about gladiators was outdated, no longer attractive enough to attract audiences to the theater.
Even the appearance of stars like Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Denzel Washington... did not meet expectations.
Vietnamese movies are sluggish
Standing at the last position in the top 5 of Box Office Vietnam is a Vietnamese film. Once upon a time there was a love story – adapted from the novel of the same name by Nguyen Nhat Anh. The film earned an additional 2 billion VND over the weekend, bringing its total revenue to 43 billion VND.
