Working scene
Since 2022, the Department of Dyke Management and Disaster Prevention and Control has coordinated with FAO in Vietnam to implement the technical assistance project "Strengthening the capacity and scale of Early Action implementation with linkages to the social protection system" with the goal of protecting livelihoods, food security and ensuring nutrition for vulnerable households in rural areas by forecasting the impacts of natural disasters, using a unified approach in implementing humanitarian assistance, strengthening governance and proactiveness in disaster risk reduction in Vietnam.
In Quang Tri , the project was piloted in 7 communes in 4 districts: Vinh Lam commune (Vinh Linh district), Gio Mai commune (Gio Linh district), Cam Hieu commune (Cam Lo district), Trieu Do and Trieu Trach communes (Trieu Phong district), Hai Phong and Hai Hung communes (Hai Lang district). The project's activities have contributed to raising awareness and skills of people and the community, gradually changing people's habits of awareness of early action before natural disasters and floods.
Standing Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Ha Sy Dong hopes to continue receiving support from FAO and ECHO in disaster prevention in the province.
At the meeting, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Ha Sy Dong said: Quang Tri province identifies natural disaster prevention and control as a regular and important task. The government and people of Quang Tri province have made many efforts and determination to effectively implement the work of preventing, responding to and overcoming the consequences of natural disasters, thereby gradually minimizing the damage caused by natural disasters.
However, recently, especially in the period of 2020 - 2024, the impact of climate change and natural disasters has become increasingly complex, abnormal, and irregular, causing great damage to people, property, infrastructure, and production, affecting the socio-economic development of the locality, typically the "storm on storm", "flood on flood" of the historic flood in 2020, the unseasonal floods in March 2022, February 2023, and recently, storms No. 4, No. 6 and floods from September 2024 to early November 2024.
Therefore, the implementation of the "Early Action Based on Forecasts for Storms and Floods" activities funded by ECHO through FAO in Quang Tri province from 2022 to present is very practical and effective, contributing to improving the capacity of disaster prevention and control for the authorities and communities in the project beneficiary areas.
Standing Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Ha Sy Dong hopes to continue receiving attention and support from ECHO and FAO for Quang Tri province in this work in the coming time.
Representatives of FAO in Vietnam and ECHO exchanged opinions with leaders of Quang Tri province.
Mr. Rémi Nono Womdim and Ms. Valentina Auricchio thanked the provincial leaders and agencies of Quang Tri province for supporting FAO and ECHO in implementing project activities in the area from 2022 to present. Vietnam is identified as a country greatly affected by climate change, therefore, enhancing the proactiveness and resilience of households to minimize damage caused by natural disasters, especially storms and floods, is an issue of great concern to FAO and ECHO, including Quang Tri province. In the coming time, FAO and ECHO will continue to support to minimize damage caused by natural disasters to households in Quang Tri.
