Many households have to both plant rice and pick out the golden apple snails that are causing damage.

According to a report from the Department of Crop Production, Plant Protection and Quality Management, golden apple snails are currently causing scattered damage to newly transplanted and greening rice fields, with a common density of 1-5 snails/ . The total area infested with golden apple snails is approximately 8 hectares, concentrated in Cho Moi, Bach Thong districts and Bac Kan city. Of this, 6 hectares are lightly and moderately infested, while 2 hectares are severely infested in Tan Tu and Vi Huong communes (Bach Thong district).

To date, the province has planted 70-80% of the total planned 8,440 hectares of spring rice. In the coming period, golden apple snails and root rot disease are predicted to cause localized damage, especially in newly planted rice fields.

At this time of year, golden apple snails are thriving, and authorities advise people to regularly collect snails and their eggs by hand to minimize damage.

Agricultural experts recommend that people apply control measures such as: erecting nets or bamboo screens to prevent golden apple snails from entering rice fields from irrigation ditches; manually catching snails and their eggs, doing so in the early morning or late afternoon when snails are most active; using pesticides such as HN-Samole 700WP, Diotor 830WDG, etc., to spray in the early morning or late afternoon to increase the effectiveness of the pesticides; maintaining a water level of 3-5cm when spraying, and continuing this for 1-2 days after spraying to kill young snails.
