Phu Quoc launches a series of massive projects to welcome APEC.

On the afternoon of March 14th, at Bai Dat Do, An Thoi ward, Phu Quoc city, the Ministry of Construction and the People's Committee of Kien Giang province held a ceremony to launch projects serving the APEC 2027 High-Level Week.

Attending the event were Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha, former Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, General Le Hong Anh - former Standing Member of the Central Party Committee, along with more than 370 delegates including leaders of central agencies, departments, and branches of Kien Giang province, Phu Quoc city, and representatives of businesses investing in Phu Quoc.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha affirmed: “We must all clearly understand that hosting APEC 2027 is both a great honor, a sacred responsibility, and an extremely heavy task. At the same time, it is also a unique and special opportunity to help Phu Quoc become the focal point of the world , affirming its position as one of the most beautiful tourist paradises on the planet, and demonstrating Vietnam's, Kien Giang's, and Phu Quoc's capacity to organize major, world-class events.”

Here, the Party and Government have clearly identified that proactively commencing key projects and works serving the conference is a crucial step in successfully organizing APEC 2027. The completed projects will not only contribute to improving infrastructure and better serving the APEC 2027 High-Level Week, but also elevate Phu Quoc Island's status on the map of attractive destinations.

Upgrading air, water, and land transportation infrastructure.

In preparation for APEC, Phu Quoc's air, water, and land transportation infrastructure is being rapidly invested in. Accordingly, Phu Quoc will build a 4E-class airport, including all necessary facilities such as increasing terminal capacity, cargo terminal, VIP terminal, aircraft parking positions, and upgrading the runway…

Phu Quoc International Airport will be expanded to 1,073 hectares, extending the existing runway to 3.5 km, constructing a new 3.3 km long second runway, building a new Terminal 2 (international terminal with a capacity of up to 20 million passengers and a VIP terminal), an apron with a capacity of up to 70 seats, a hangar (aircraft storage), aircraft maintenance and repair facilities, and a cargo warehouse…

In addition, Rach Gia Airport has been directed to be upgraded and expanded to approximately 200 hectares, extending the runway by about 2.4 km and constructing a new terminal, in order to accommodate larger aircraft.

In addition to air transport, the An Thoi international seaport will be upgraded to a scale of 100 hectares, capable of accommodating the world's largest cruise ships such as Icon of the Seas, with a capacity of 7,000 to 10,000 passengers.

Regarding road transport routes from Phu Quoc Airport to the APEC Convention Center, Phu Quoc will expand Provincial Road 975, invest in the construction of a new urban ferry route, implement the eastern coastal road project, upgrade the main roads from Duong Dong to the north of the island (975B), and the East-West Phu Quoc Boulevard project connecting the new administrative area of ​​Phu Quoc with Ham Ninh Port. In addition, the APEC Boulevard project will create a horizontal axis connecting Provincial Roads 973 and 975 with the APEC multi-functional complex, with a roadbed width of 68m and a length of approximately 3 km.

In addition to new roads, Phu Quoc will also upgrade and underground many infrastructure projects in existing urban areas such as An Thoi and Duong Dong, and urgently complete infrastructure projects to create synchronized development for the city, such as: investing in reservoirs and water treatment plants; renovating the Duong Dong River; building wastewater treatment plants and domestic waste treatment plants.

Investing in a multi-functional complex.

The APEC multi-functional complex is a key project contributing to elevating the nation's standing in the new era. The project involves reclaiming 57 hectares of land from the sea, eliminating the need for land clearance and creating a land reserve for development with unique landscapes connected to the existing beach.

The complex has a total capacity of nearly 15,000 people, including: a 10,000 ^m² Convention and Exhibition Center serving international conferences and seminars with a capacity of 3,000-3,500 seats; a multi-purpose auditorium; an International Press Center capable of accommodating 3,000-4,000 journalists; APEC Square; a high-rise mixed-use complex including a hotel, a duty-free shopping mall, and a multi-purpose cultural and arts center with a capacity of 3,000-3,500 seats, equipped with modern facilities capable of hosting art programs and shows staged by leading international organizations. Within the multi-purpose cultural and arts center, there is also a food court capable of serving 3,000-4,000 people.

In addition, there is a mixed-use complex featuring a 69-story iconic building, combining offices, a hotel, a shopping mall, and a marina, which is expected to become a landmark project for Phu Quoc in the new century.

Along with existing iconic structures such as the Kissing Bridge, the world's longest cable car to Hon Thom Island, and the multi-media show Kiss of the Sea with nightly fireworks displays, the multi-functional complex, upon its launch, will not only contribute to the success of APEC 2027 but also create a new symbol for Phu Quoc, generating sustainable value for the local tourism industry.

APEC 2027 is seen as a historic opportunity for Phu Quoc, but it also presents many challenges for the island, especially regarding the completion of projects. To ensure these projects are completed on time, Phu Quoc needs the strong support of the local government and the vigorous involvement of carefully selected strategic investors.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nhan, Chairman of the People's Committee of Kien Giang province, emphasized: "If Decision 178 laid an important foundation and served as a guiding principle to 'help Phu Quoc take off,' then the APEC 2027 event is a second, extremely valuable and groundbreaking opportunity, opening up the path to strong development for 'Phu Quoc in the new era - the era of national progress.' This is not only an opportunity to elevate the international standing and promote the image of Phu Quoc and Kien Giang, but also the image and position of Vietnam on the international stage."

With only two years left for Phu Quoc to prepare for APEC 2027, the Deputy Prime Minister instructed Phu Quoc to effectively carry out investment preparation and land clearance for projects; accelerate investment promotion and attract strategic investors; and urgently negotiate and identify existing projects to develop plans for upgrading and improving their quality. This requires the concerted and urgent efforts of Kien Giang province, Phu Quoc city, and strategic investors in upgrading and investing in selected projects and infrastructure.
