On August 16th, Ngo Quang Chien, Director of the Department of Internal Affairs of Quang Tri province, announced that the Provincial People's Committee had submitted to the Ministry of Internal Affairs a plan for the reorganization of district and commune-level administrative units for the period 2023-2025.

Currently, the project has been reviewed by the Central Appraisal Council before being submitted to the Government for consideration and then to the Standing Committee of the National Assembly .

According to this plan, Quang Tri province will reorganize 13 commune-level administrative units. The province consulted with voters during this process, and the results showed that the majority of voters agreed with the proposed plan.

Accordingly, the merger of Linh Hai commune and Gio Son commune (Gio Linh district) into Gio Son commune received over 99% voter approval; the merger of Ha Thanh hamlet of Gio Chau commune into Gio Quang commune (Gio Linh district) received over 80% voter approval.

Similarly, the merger of Ha Thuong and Ha Trung hamlets of Gio Chau commune into Gio Linh town (Gio Linh district) received over 80% voter approval. The merger of Trieu Son and Trieu Lang communes into Trieu Co commune (Trieu Phong district) also received voter support, with over 90% agreeing...

Due to specific circumstances, Quang Tri province has decided not to implement the reorganization of 8 communes, wards, and towns in the 2023-2025 period, including Quang Tri town and Con Co island district. These two units do not meet the prescribed standards in terms of natural area and population size.

However, Quang Tri province requested that these two units not be reorganized yet due to their unique characteristics related to historical traditions, geographical location, natural conditions, local communities, and the need to ensure national defense, security, social order and safety, as well as socio-economic development.

The Provincial People's Committee proposes that the restructuring of Quang Tri town be considered in the period after 2030, simultaneously with the establishment of Hai Lang town according to the provincial plan approved by the Prime Minister.

Quang Tri town has unique characteristics regarding its historical formation and rich revolutionary traditions. In particular, the Quang Tri Ancient Citadel has been recognized as a special national-level revolutionary historical site. Therefore, planning for the town's relocation presents many challenges.

Reportedly, during the period 2019-2021, Quang Tri province reorganized 24 communes and towns. After the reorganization, the province now has 125 communes, a reduction of 16 communes, and nearly 500 commune-level officials and civil servants were laid off.

The head of the Quang Tri Provincial Department of Internal Affairs also stated that the process of soliciting voter opinions on the plan to merge administrative units in Quang Tri province was carried out in a systematic and objective manner, taking into account all the wishes of the people.
