After suffering serious injuries, particularly to his knee, Alaba understood that his chances of continuing to play for a top European team were almost nonexistent. |
The Austrian player is expected to leave the club next summer, when his current contract expires on June 30, 2026. According to AS , Real Madrid's management has decided not to offer Alaba a contract extension, even if he accepts a significant reduction in his current salary.
The main reasons are his persistent injury problems in recent years, along with his high salary and plans to rejuvenate the defense.
The Austrian defender will receive a salary of €22.5 million per year for the 2025/26 season at Real Madrid, equivalent to approximately €432,692 per week. This figure places him among the highest-paid players in La Liga, behind only Kylian Mbappe (€31.25 million) and other stars such as Robert Lewandowski and Frenkie de Jong.
However, Alaba's contributions to Real Madrid have not been commensurate with his value. In the last two seasons (2023/24 and 2024/25), the 33-year-old defender has only played a mere 24 matches in La Liga.
A serious ligament injury to his left knee in December 2023 kept him out of action for over 399 days, forcing him to undergo two surgeries.
In the summer of 2025, Real Madrid's management proposed an agreement to terminate Alaba's contract, which involved paying him half of his salary and allowing him to freely find a new club. However, the player flatly refused. He was determined to stay with Real Madrid until his contract expired the following summer, while receiving his full current salary.
