Speaking on TNT Sports after Real Madrid's 3-4 defeat to Bayern Munich in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals on the morning of April 16th, McManaman argued that the real power at the Bernabéu lies not with the coaching staff but with the players.
“The players are the bosses of Real Madrid. That’s the core of the issue,” the former English midfielder emphasized. He then compared it to other teams like Arne Slot’s Liverpool or Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, where the manager plays a decisive role.
According to McManaman, the situation of players "not listening to the coach" is nothing new at Real Madrid. He revealed that often, the coach gives specific tactical instructions, but when they go out onto the field, the players play in their own way.
"That always happens," McManaman said, emphasizing that it's a major challenge for any manager who has ever worked at the club.

According to him, a successful manager must possess both sharp tactical thinking and the ability to create cohesion and make the entire team feel like an important part of the team. McManaman also warned that cramming too many tactical exercises or video analysis sessions can backfire, causing players to lose interest.
Meanwhile, Jorge Valdano, former Sporting Director of Real Madrid, also spoke out after the team's defeat. He argued that Eduardo Camavinga's red card changed the course of the match and criticized the referee for his harsh decision.
Valdano then also sent a warning to coach Alvaro Arbeloa, emphasizing that Real Madrid is a team with a "winning culture" and always prioritizes results.
The scenario of ending the season empty-handed is becoming increasingly likely for the Bernabéu team. If that happens, it will be the second consecutive season that Real Madrid has failed to win a major title, something that hasn't happened in the past 16 years.
