Bustling straw rolling season

In the fields that have just finished harvesting the 2023-2024 Winter-Spring rice crop in Hau Giang , straw rolling and straw trading are very busy. Rolling machines and straw-carrying motorbikes weave through the fields, creating a vibrant atmosphere. This year, the rice crop is bountiful, the price is good, and the people doing this job also have a beautiful straw season. Hau Giang Newspaper reporters captured these moments in the fields.

At this time, in the rice fields, the harvest atmosphere becomes more exciting when many straw rolling machines appear, mixed with rice cutting and gathering machines operating continuously.

Each motorbike carries 5-7 rolls of straw, depending on the distance of the field. Although the work is hard, the income is about 700,000 VND/day or more.

Straw rolling is usually done in teams, from harvesting rice, to collecting straw and cutting stubble, all done by machine. A team has about 40 members in total, each person in charge of a stage.

Straw rolls are used by people as food for buffaloes and cows; to make mushrooms, compost fruit trees and vegetables, improve soil fertility and help plants grow well.

Following the cutting machine, the straw rolling machine worked continuously, creating an exciting atmosphere. The rolled straw was transported away as soon as it was rolled.

Straw is bundled into neat rolls weighing 18-20kg. Each work produces 12-15 rolls of straw, more or less depending on the thickness of the straw.

Straw rolling is quite a hard job, so workers have to work at full capacity, from 10am to about 6pm, from one field to another, continuously throughout the Western provinces.

Due to the increasing demand for straw, straw is in high demand during each rice harvest, with each roll being sold for about 13,000 VND, or even higher depending on transportation conditions and quantity.

Farmers not only have an additional income of 50,000 VND/ha from selling straw but also reduce the cost of cleaning the fields. After the straw is rolled and transported, the stubble will be cut and chopped by machine, preparing for the new crop. In case the field owner gives the straw to the trader to roll the straw himself, the cost of cutting the stubble will be exempted.
