The tradition of enjoying flowers and ornamental plants during Tet (Vietnamese New Year) has long been a beautiful cultural practice for Vietnamese people, based on the belief that each flower and branch at the beginning of spring brings good luck, wealth, and peace. These days, the flower and ornamental plant gardens in Yen Bai ward are bustling with customers placing orders.

Garden owners are focusing their efforts on caring for and selecting beautiful flowers and unique ornamental plants to keep up with trends and supply the market. Currently, phalaenopsis orchids are priced at an average of 150,000 VND per pot, cymbidium orchids range from 80,000 to 100,000 VND per stem, tulips cost from 150,000 to 200,000 VND per pot, and gerbera daisies cost from 50,000 to 100,000 VND per pot...
Looking at the lovely, colorful flower pots, Ms. Ngo Thi Vuong Bich, owner of Thao Bich garden in Yen Bai ward, said: "Currently, the best-selling flowers and ornamental plants are begonia, petunia, marigold, begonia, lucky bamboo, money tree, snake plant..."
On average, the nursery sells about 30-40 pots of various flowers per day. Due to higher market demand this year compared to last year and concerns about price increases closer to Tet (Lunar New Year), most businesses and individuals buying flowers for display or as gifts have already placed their orders.

Mr. Nguyen Hoang Hiep, from Van Phu ward - a flower buyer - shared: "I find the flower and ornamental plant market this year more diverse than last year, and the prices are reasonable. I chose a money plant for my family for 300,000 VND. This plant is a symbol of luck and fortune, so it's very suitable to display in the living room."
According to Vietnamese beliefs, each type of flower and each type of tree not only possesses aesthetic value but also conveys wishes for a prosperous and peaceful new year. For example, peach blossoms symbolize good fortune and ward off bad luck; while the single-branch plum blossom is favored for its elegant and pure beauty, representing sophistication and longevity.

Observations in Sa Pa ward show that many varieties of peach blossoms, apricot blossoms, kumquat trees, etc., have been put on display. The peach trees are meticulously shaped, from upright and cascading styles to dragon and phoenix forms, suitable for various spaces such as homes, offices, and shops. Apricot blossoms are also carefully tended, with moss-covered trunks and plump flower buds, promising to bloom just in time for Tet (Lunar New Year).
This year, Bao Ngoc Garden (Sa Pa ward) has about 1,000 peach trees and 500 apricot blossom trees. In addition to the trees they grow themselves, the garden also purchases about 700 trees from local people that meet the standards in terms of shape and quality to bring to market.
Mr. Le Van Dai, owner of Bao Ngoc garden, shared: "From mid-December, we started transporting flowers and ornamental plants to centralized display points. Our flowers are sold everywhere, including Hanoi , Hai Phong, and Quang Ninh..."

According to Mr. Dai, this year has seen many dry spells, and the average temperature during winter has been warmer than in previous years, so caring for flowers and ornamental plants requires more advanced techniques and closer monitoring.
Gardeners must constantly adjust watering schedules, provide shade, and prune plants to ensure that flowers bloom at the right time and maintain their beautiful shape when they reach the buyer.
Customers mainly choose mid-range flowers and ornamental plants, with prices ranging from 3 to 5 million VND per plant. This price range is suitable for the economic conditions of many families, ensuring both aesthetic appeal and fulfilling the need for flowers during Tet without being too expensive. Plants with beautiful shapes, easy to care for, long-lasting blooms, and reasonable prices are the preferred choice for many customers.
“Besides selling directly at the garden and centralized display points, the nursery has leveraged social media to reach customers. Currently, about 60% of the nursery's customers buy online. Through taking photos, recording videos, and livestreaming to introduce each plant, customers far away can still choose their desired plant, and then the nursery will deliver it to their doorstep,” Mr. Dai added.

According to orchard owners, demand is expected to increase sharply from now until the Lunar New Year, especially in the 10-15 days before New Year's Eve. The orchards are closely monitoring weather conditions and adjusting cultivation techniques to ensure the best quality for their customers.
It can be seen that the trend of people enjoying flowers and ornamental plants has changed significantly in recent years. For many, it's no longer just a hobby during Tet (Lunar New Year), but has become an elegant, everyday pastime, making the flower and ornamental plant market bustling from very early on during the Tet season.
