Blackburn Rovers have dashed hopes of former Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney returning to the coaching bench.

Speaking to the Independent , Rudy Gestede, Blackburn Rovers' Director of Football, dismissed the possibility of bringing Rooney back as head coach. “We are happy with Valerian and want to give him more time. Choosing a manager is based on a long-term project, so changing it now would be illogical,” Gestede emphasized.

Previously, British media reported that Blackburn Rovers wanted to bring Rooney in to replace manager Valerian. The former Manchester United striker himself was also ready to take the job, after being unemployed since the end of last year.

However, at the last minute, Blackburn Rovers changed their minds. With Gestede's statement, the door to Rooney's return to coaching remains closed. After leaving Plymouth Argyle late last year, Rooney admitted he still dreams of coaching and is ready to return if a reasonable offer comes his way.

Recently, Rooney has returned to his role as a television commentator. Since pursuing a coaching career, Rooney has faced many setbacks. The former England international failed while managing Derby County, DC United, Birmingham City, and most recently Plymouth Argyle.

Notably, Rooney's tenure at Birmingham lasted a mere 15 games before he was sacked in January. At Plymouth, Rooney also only managed the team for just over six months before leaving due to the team finishing bottom of the Championship table.
