With a time of 2 hours, 34 minutes, and 6 seconds at the 2023 San Sebastian Marathon, Spanish athlete Jon Arzubialde set a national record for the age group 60 and over, and was just over four minutes short of the world record.
On the track in San Sebastian last weekend, Arzubialde achieved a pace of 3:39, or 3 minutes and 39 seconds per kilometer, leaving runners of the same age group 18 minutes behind.
Arzubialde completed the 10km mark in 36 minutes and 28 seconds, and the half-time in 1 hour, 16 minutes, and 46 seconds, before crossing the finish line in 2 hours, 34 minutes, and 6 seconds. Out of 3,000 competitors, Arzubialde finished 23rd overall, a time not far behind the women's champion, Emmah Cheruto Ndiwa from Kenya, who finished in 2 hours and 31 minutes.

Arzubialde set a new Spanish marathon record for the age group 60 and over, achieving the second-best time in history for this age group. That record is currently held by Irish athlete Tommy Hughes, with a time of 2 hours, 30 minutes, and 2 seconds, set in 2020.
Tommy Hughes shattered the previous record held by Yoshinisa Hosaka of Japan, which was 2 hours 36 minutes and 30 seconds. Since setting the new milestone, Hughes has achieved under 2:32 three times, including coming close to his own record of 2 hours 30 minutes and 5 seconds at the 2022 Manchester Marathon at the age of 62.
Arzubialde and Hughes are also the only two 60-year-old athletes in history to have run marathons in under 2 hours and 35 minutes.
Arzubialde is a veteran Spanish runner and currently holds several records in the age group of 55 and over, including the 3,000m race in 9 minutes 20 seconds 60 and the 100km race in 7 hours 34 minutes 29 seconds.
Arzubialde revealed that she achieved a 4-hour time on her first marathon at the age of 16. The Spanish runner's training regimen includes running six days a week, averaging around 70 km.
