Spain With 2 hours 34 minutes 6 seconds at the San Sebastian Marathon 2023, Spanish athlete Jon Arzubialde set a national record in the 60+ age group and was just over four minutes off the world record.
On the track in San Sebastian last weekend, Arzubialde reached a pace of 3:39, or 3 minutes and 39 seconds per kilometer, 18 minutes ahead of the runners of the same age.
Arzubialde covered the 10km mark in 36 minutes 28 seconds and the half-marathon in 1 hour 16 minutes 46 seconds, before crossing the finish line in 2 hours 34 minutes 6 seconds. Out of 3,000 runners, Arzubialde finished 23rd overall, not far behind the women's champion Emmah Cheruto Ndiwa - a Kenyan who finished in 2 hours 31 minutes.

Arzubialde set a new Spanish marathon record for the 60+ age group and the second-best time in history for this age group, currently held by Irishman Tommy Hughes with 2 hours 30 minutes 2 seconds set in 2020.
Tommy Hughes smashed the previous record of 2 hours 36 minutes 30 seconds held by Japan's Yoshinisa Hosaka. Since setting the new milestone, Hughes has broken sub-2:32 three times, including closing in on his own record with 2 hours 30 minutes 5 seconds at the 2022 Manchester Marathon at the age of 62.
Arzubialde and Hughes are also the only two 60-year-olds in history to run a marathon in under 2 hours 35 minutes.
Arzubialde is a veteran Spanish runner and currently holds several records in the 55+ age group, including the 3,000m in 9:20:60 and the 100km in 7:34:29.
Arzubialde revealed that he broke 4 hours in his first marathon at the age of 16. The Spanish runner's training regime includes running six days a week, averaging around 70km.
