Many cases of cosmetic surgery complications.

Having just received her Lunar New Year bonus, and with a nearby beauty salon offering a "50% off beauty treatments for Tet," 25-year-old NTV from Hanoi decided to get filler injections to fill in her temples and make her face look fuller. However, after the injection, she experienced swelling on one side of her face. Doctors at the Central Dermatology Hospital diagnosed her with cellulitis.

Dr. Nguyen Quang Minh, Deputy Head of the Stem Cell Department at the Central Dermatology Hospital, said: "This is a typical case of complications from filler injections to fill in the temples. We had to inject filler-dissolving medication, use strong anti-inflammatory drugs, and strong antibiotics; however, complete recovery is very difficult."

Further explaining the cause of the complications, Dr. Minh said that patients may experience excessive injections in one location, causing increased compression of the lymphatic system and veins, leading to swelling.

For example, Ms. HTN (Hanoi) came to the hospital with a face covered in red bumps. This was the result of two weeks of mesotherapy injections at a spa. After examination, Ms. N was diagnosed with granulomatous lesions after the mesotherapy injections. The doctor prescribed oral medication, anti-inflammatory injections, and granuloma tissue injections to dissolve the bumps, but it was uncertain whether her skin would be restored to its original state.

According to Dr. Minh, many patients who come to the hospital in similar conditions require 3-6 months of treatment before their condition can stabilize.

The "instant beauty" advertising gimmick

According to Dr. Nguyen Quang Minh, most complications from cosmetic surgery occur in unlicensed cosmetic facilities and among practitioners who have not been granted licenses to practice in medical aesthetics.

Common complications mainly relate to procedures such as filler injections, botulinum toxin injections, mesotherapy, and related techniques using machines and technologies to alter the surface skin structure, such as laser and chemical peels.

According to Dr. Minh, customers should also be wary of exaggerated promotions and advertisements, and avoid beauty salons with excessively low prices. They should choose safe and effective methods, and select licensed and experienced establishments.

According to Dr. Nguyen Tien Thanh, Deputy Head of the Quality Management Department at the Central Dermatology Hospital, when livestreaming advertisements, the cosmetic facility presented very vivid images. The spokespersons in those advertisements were not medical professionals and lacked expertise in medical fields.

Advertising gimmicks only target criteria that the majority of customers think are "good, nutritious, and cheap." Advertisements claiming "completely eliminates melasma after one use" or "meso injections at a cheap price of only a few hundred thousand dong" are not true. Good products cannot be that cheap.

"In just December 2023 and the first half of January 2024, I received more than 30 patients with complications after undergoing beauty treatments at unlicensed beauty salons, spas, and barbershops. Currently, most spas, beauty salons, and barbershops send their staff to short-term training courses of about 3-4 months, after which they directly perform procedures such as mesotherapy and filler injections for customers."

Notably, the training centers do not pay attention to the entry-level qualifications or check the training results of the trainees. Meanwhile, these invasive procedures are only permitted to be performed at medical facilities licensed by the Department of Health and the Ministry of Health , and approved in the list of techniques within their professional scope of practice," Dr. Thanh said.

According to Dr. Nguyen Tien Thanh, Deputy Head of the Quality Management Department at the Central Dermatology Hospital, among invasive skin beautification methods, some techniques require clients to undergo multiple treatment sessions for safety and effectiveness. However, many people are impatient to use the service once and therefore face many side effects.
