The mistake of brushing your teeth before eating breakfast.

Opening the conference, Deputy Minister of Health Tran Van Thuan assessed: The Vietnamese dental and maxillofacial sector continuously updates new and advanced techniques in many specialized fields. It is also one of the few sectors that has not only successfully retained patients from going abroad, but also attracted overseas Vietnamese and foreigners to Vietnam for medical treatment. One of the reasons is that the quality of treatment is comparable to that of other countries in the region and around the world, while the cost is only 30-40%.

For optimal oral hygiene, everyone should brush their teeth at least twice a day.

Regarding common oral diseases, Associate Professor Dr. Tran Cao Binh, President of the Vietnam Dental Association and Director of the Central Dental Hospital ( Hanoi ), stated that the incidence of oral diseases such as cavities, gingivitis, and periodontitis among the Vietnamese population is very high. According to studies, 90% of Vietnamese people suffer from oral diseases, while the percentage of people who have regular dental check-ups each year is very low, only about 7%. Most people only seek treatment when they experience symptoms such as swelling, pain, and infection, therefore treatment is often costly and complicated.

Notably, up to 85% of children suffer from cavities in their primary teeth. Cavities in permanent teeth are also increasing with age. In adults, over 80% suffer from gingivitis or periodontitis. These conditions are the leading causes of premature tooth loss.

Associate Professor Tran Cao Binh further shared that people often have the habit of waking up, brushing their teeth, and then eating breakfast immediately afterward. However, to help keep teeth stronger, there should be a time gap between brushing and eating. Specifically, wait two hours after brushing before eating. The reason is that toothpaste contains sodium fluoride (also known as fluorine), which helps protect teeth and keep them strong. If you eat immediately after brushing, the fluoride will be excreted, will not remain in saliva, and will not be able to penetrate the teeth to protect the enamel.

To best protect your oral health, everyone should brush their teeth at least twice a day. Brush for at least two minutes each time. Avoid eating for about two hours after brushing. Have a dental check-up twice a year.
