Viet Duc Friendship Hospital said it will organize a free examination and consultation program for scoliosis in children from May 22 to 26.5, in Hanoi.
This is a program that is performed annually by the Hospital's Spine Surgery Department with the hope that children with this pathology will be treated promptly, by leading experts at home and abroad.
Most recently, through the first free examination for children, Dr. Nguyen Hoang Long, Deputy Head of Spine Surgery Department, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, directly examined and consulted for a 1-year-old girl patient in Quang Ninh and a 4-year-old male patient in Bac Ninh, two typical cases of scoliosis.
In which, a 4-year-old child has scoliosis, concave chest, asymmetrical shoulders, impaired respiratory function, and malformation of the sternum.
According to Dr. Long, a 4-year-old child with congenital scoliosis needs to be closely monitored, otherwise his lungs will be underdeveloped later. The family's early detection, taking the child to the doctor in time helps to find the best treatment plan.
Meanwhile, a 16-year-old male patient was found by his family to have scoliosis at the age of 2, and was diagnosed by a specialized hospital with polyneuritis. Currently, the patient's scoliosis angle is up to 120 degrees, greatly affecting respiratory function, pulmonary ventilation disorder.
Dr. Long said, this patient needs to check more about lung function, cardiovascular, do more tests for doctors to consult to find out the cause as well as come up with an appropriate treatment plan. If the patient is healthy enough for surgery, the patient will have to undergo 2 surgeries. In it, surgery will be performed to make the spine more flexible and then surgery to straighten it.
"However, even if the surgery is successful, it does not mean that the patient's spine will be as straight as a normal person because the curvature of the spine is too large. But without early surgery, the situation of compression on the nerve can cause paralysis for the patient, "said Dr. Long.
Need early treatment to avoid complications
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dinh Ngoc Son, Head of Spine Surgery Department, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, added that the number of children with curvature and scoliosis accounts for 0,5-1% of the population. Up to 80-85% of cases have curvature, scoliosis of unknown cause, some due to congenital diseases, or other diseases related to neuromuscular. Besides, many other cases of scoliosis due to sitting in the wrong posture for a long time.
Early detection of scoliosis in children and timely treatment will contribute to preventing and minimizing complications that cause severe spinal deformities and seriously affect the development of other internal organs such as lungs, thorax, respiratory failure, threatening the health and life of children. If the disease is milder, it can affect the aesthetics and affect the psycho-physiological development of the child.
According to Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, scoliosis is a condition when the spine curve is 10 degrees or more. Normally, the human spine is straight, if it is less than 10 degrees, it is acceptable. Timely detection and treatment will help children prevent scoliosis from getting worse, avoid unnecessary surgeries and affect quality of life.
