On January 12th, Apple announced it had signed a multi-year partnership agreement with Google, using Gemini models to power the future of Apple Intelligence. In 2024, when the company first announced Apple Intelligence, Apple promised that each new iPhone model would be designed from the ground up for this technology.
According to Bloomberg reporter Austin Carr, a long-term partnership with Google could be seen as a greater blow to Apple's reputation. He argues that this would diminish the differentiation and competitiveness of the iPhone compared to Android models on the market.
"For those considering iPhones and Androids in the future, Apple Intelligence may no longer be a selling point when Google's AI is at its core," Carr wrote. He also suggested that the possibility of Google's model replacing Apple Intelligence would be disappointing for those using newer iPhone models.
Apple has previously collaborated with major developers like OpenAI and Claude, but has chosen a core partner that has ensured the capabilities of AI models on Samsung phones. According to Sammobile , this shows the company is facing a shortage of options as competitors are constantly making breakthroughs, while its internal AI efforts have not met expectations.
Despite a relatively slow start, Gemini quickly rose to become one of the industry's leading AI models. Samsung quickly recognized this potential and integrated Gemini deeply into the Galaxy S24 series, marking the beginning of the company's aggressive Galaxy AI strategy.
That integration was further enhanced on the Galaxy S25 line and the foldable phones launched last year, with Gemini becoming an integral part of the Galaxy AI feature set.
Samsung placed its faith in Gemini at a time when many believed OpenAI's ChatGPT would shape the future of consumer-oriented AI. This was seen as a major endorsement of Google's innovative capabilities in the rapidly changing field of AI, especially as public attention was almost entirely focused on ChatGPT.
The company announced a collaborative AI approach from the outset. Samsung quickly asserted that delivering powerful AI experiences to consumers required partnerships and collaboration with other businesses in the industry. This allowed them to maintain the pace of innovation and unlock the full potential of AI on phones.
It's also worth noting that many other Android phone models from Oppo, Honor, and Vivo also use Google Gemini models for advanced AI functions that require significant processing power, in combination with their own developed models for on-device AI features.
Meanwhile, Google significantly expanded its capabilities and improved its Gemini model, putting OpenAI at a considerable disadvantage. Google's stock surged, demonstrating that the company was not falling behind but was in a leading position in the AI race.
This shows that it took Apple more than two years to realize what Samsung had been doing from the start, according to Sammobile. Apple's choice of Gemini further reinforces the Galaxy AI developer's decision.
This also gives Samsung a visual advantage, demonstrating a good understanding of the market landscape. Above all, Google seems to benefit the most by simultaneously running AI features for two of the world's leading device manufacturers, a feat few other AI companies can achieve.
