According to recent reports, Google's decision to choose TSMC over Samsung to manufacture the Tensor G5 chip for the upcoming Pixel 10 series is considered a "shock" to Samsung.

For many years, Google has partnered with Samsung to produce its custom Tensor chipsets for Pixel devices. Despite numerous improvements, this process has faced considerable challenges. However, the American tech giant has now transitioned to designing its own processors entirely independently and has chosen TSMC as its chip manufacturing partner.

The Tensor G5 will be Google's first chipset manufactured by TSMC, a company that supplies chips to many major brands such as Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Apple.

According to The Bell , Samsung is internally investigating and analyzing the reasons behind Google's termination of its chip partnership, an internal report dubbed the "Google incident." An industry insider commented that the loss of this "major business deal" has exposed numerous underlying problems within Samsung's operations, sparking considerable internal debate and concern.

The report indicates that Google's performance and feature requirements are becoming more diverse, while Samsung is considered to lack the necessary semiconductor design resources. Additionally, productivity issues in Samsung's 3nm chip manufacturing process are also a factor in Google's decision to shift direction.

Google isn't the only customer to abandon Samsung. A report from late May indicated that the South Korean tech giant is struggling to find new partners for chip manufacturing services, amid significantly superior productivity from TSMC. Specifically, TSMC is said to achieve a productivity level of around 90% with its 3nm process, while Samsung only reaches about 50%.

Despite ceasing its collaboration with Samsung on Tensor chipset production, the Pixel 10 is still expected to incorporate a modem supplied by Samsung, according to recent leaks.
