According to a recent report, Google's choice of TSMC instead of Samsung to manufacture the Tensor G5 chip on the upcoming Pixel 10 series is considered a "shock" to Samsung.

For years, Google has worked with Samsung to produce its custom Tensor chipsets for Pixel devices. Despite improvements, the process has been fraught with difficulties. However, the US tech giant has now moved to designing its own processors entirely, choosing TSMC as its chip manufacturing partner.

The Tensor G5 will be Google's first chipset manufactured by TSMC, a manufacturer that supplies chips to major brands like Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Apple.

According to a source from The Bell , Samsung is internally investigating and analyzing the reason why Google stopped cooperating with the chip division, internally calling it the “Google incident”. An industry insider commented that the loss of a “big business” has exposed many outstanding problems in Samsung’s operations, and has caused a lot of internal debate and concern.

The report said Google's performance and feature needs are becoming more diverse, while Samsung is considered to lack the necessary semiconductor design resources. In addition, yield issues with Samsung's 3nm chip process are also factors that led Google to decide to change direction.

Google isn’t the only customer ditching Samsung. A report in late May suggested that the South Korean tech giant is struggling to find a new partner for its chip manufacturing services, given TSMC’s significantly higher productivity. Specifically, TSMC is said to have a yield rate of around 90% on its 3nm process, while Samsung only has around 50%.

Despite ending its partnership with Samsung in the production of Tensor chipsets, the Pixel 10 is still expected to integrate a modem provided by Samsung, according to recent leaks.
