Choosing the right time for surgery can be dangerous for both mother and child.
According to the National Children's Hospital, many families still choose elective cesarean sections even before the mother shows signs of labor in order to "select an auspicious date and time," hoping their child will have a lucky and prosperous future.
However, this option carries many risks that can seriously affect the health and even the lives of both the mother and the newborn.
The heartbreaking case recently recorded at the Neonatal Center of the National Children's Hospital is a testament to the unfortunate consequences.
The newborn was delivered by cesarean section at 37 weeks at the family's request to "choose an auspicious date and time." Immediately after birth, the baby showed signs of respiratory distress, required oxygen, and was urgently transferred to another hospital.
Upon arrival at the Neonatal Center of the National Children's Hospital, the infant was cyanotic, suffering from severe circulatory failure, and was diagnosed with severe pulmonary hypertension.
Despite intensive resuscitation efforts, including advanced techniques such as mechanical ventilation, surfactant administration, and iNO therapy, the child did not respond to treatment.
After two days of intensive treatment, the child did not survive.
In fact, doctors have recently recorded many similar cases where newborns fall into critical condition after being delivered by cesarean section before labor began, because the family wanted an "auspicious date and time".
According to doctors, choosing a time for a cesarean section refers to selecting a specific time of day to perform the surgical delivery in cases of cesarean births. This is often based on beliefs, feng shui, or the desire to bring good luck, health, and success to the baby.
According to the Ministry of Health 's 2022 report on maternal and child health care, the rate of cesarean sections accounted for nearly 37% of all births, with some hospitals reaching 50-60%, many times higher than the 10-15% recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) to protect the health of mothers and newborns and limit dangerous complications.
The rate of cesarean sections is increasing due to several reasons, the most common being families actively choosing the date and time of birth. In addition, high-risk labor cases are often recommended by doctors for cesarean sections to ensure the safety of both mother and baby…
Medical experts warn that cesarean sections carry more risks than vaginal deliveries, raising concerns about the long-term health of both mother and baby.

Natural childbirth is a safe method for both mother and baby.
According to recommendations from health experts, natural childbirth (vaginal delivery) remains the most natural and safest method for both mother and baby. This method offers many practical benefits: it helps mothers recover faster, reduces the risk of blood loss and postpartum infections, promotes early milk production, and saves costs.
In particular, natural childbirth allows mothers to fully experience the sacred and meaningful journey of giving birth.
For babies, natural childbirth helps them adapt to the outside environment better. Thanks to the pressure of contractions during labor, mucus in the lungs and respiratory tract is expelled, reducing the risk of respiratory distress.
Babies are exposed to beneficial microorganisms from their mother's vaginal tract, which helps develop their immune and digestive systems. Additionally, babies born vaginally can easily have skin-to-skin contact and breastfeed early in the delivery room, thereby strengthening the emotional bond and supporting physical and emotional development from the very first hours of life.
The health and safety of both mother and baby are always the top priority. Therefore, cesarean sections should only be performed when there is a clear medical indication.
Instead of worrying about choosing a birth time or unnecessary interventions, expectant mothers should proactively monitor their pregnancy regularly and choose reputable medical facilities with experienced doctors.
This is an important preparatory step to ensure a safe and smooth childbirth, giving your baby a healthy and fulfilling start in life.
