On March 28, Dr. Phan Thi Hang, Deputy Head of the Obstetrics Department at the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital in Dong Hoi ( Quang Tri province ), announced that the hospital had successfully performed an emergency cesarean section, safely delivering a baby weighing 5.1 kg.
Patient BTNP (born in 1996, residing in Quang Trach commune) was pregnant with her second child and had regular check-ups. At week 24, the gestational diabetes screening results were normal. However, at week 37, an ultrasound revealed the fetus weighed approximately 5kg, indicating an obstetric abnormality.

Upon re-checking her blood sugar levels, doctors discovered that the pregnant woman had gestational diabetes with an HbA1C level of 7.5%. Given the risk of a large fetus and metabolic disorders, the medical team consulted and decided to perform an emergency cesarean section.
After birth, the baby experienced hypoglycemia and was transferred to the Neonatal Unit for monitoring. After a week of treatment, the baby's health stabilized, she was feeding well, and was discharged from the hospital.
According to Dr. Phan Thi Hang, many pregnant women become complacent after receiving normal screening results, while gestational diabetes can still develop later in life, especially in the final months when nutritional needs increase.
Dr. Hang also noted that the notion that "a large fetus is a healthy fetus" is not entirely accurate. An excessively large fetus can be a sign of metabolic disorders, increasing risks for both mother and baby such as cesarean section, postpartum hemorrhage, hypoglycemia, or respiratory disorders in the infant.
Based on the above facts, doctors recommend that when there are signs of rapid fetal growth, polyhydramnios, or unusual weight gain in the mother, pregnant women should have their blood sugar checked to promptly detect and treat any problems and minimize complications.
