From seamstress to musical dreamer
Lieutenant Colonel, People's Artist Nhat Thuan is the Team Leader of the Singing Team at the Military Arts Troupe of Military Region 3.
Born in 1976 in Hai Phong , her journey into the arts was not a bed of roses. Even while still in school, she showed a natural talent and passion for singing. The first milestone marking her talent was the Gold Medal at the Red Phoenix Flower Singing Festival in 1995.
However, at that time, singing was not considered a stable profession. Facing opposition from her family, the young student Nhat Thuan had to put her dream aside and learn tailoring. She had envisioned a peaceful future working at her sewing machine, becoming a seamstress in a military unit.
However, fate opened a new chapter when her singing talent was unexpectedly discovered by the commander of the Military Arts Troupe of Military Region 3. With sincere persuasion from the unit, her family agreed to let her pursue a professional career. She passed the entrance exam and received formal training at the Military University of Culture and Arts – a place that nurtured the artistic dreams of countless soldiers.
After graduating, instead of pursuing opportunities at major art centers in the capital, the young artist decided to return to her hometown. She joined the Army Corps 3 Performing Arts Troupe, which she considers her second home and a place she will dedicate her life to.
With her versatile abilities, she successfully performs many different musical genres, from folk melodies to heroic anthems. Songs like "The Country," "Forever Vietnam," "Mother's Scarf," or songs with a hometown feel like "Hai Phong, Warmth of Hometown Love" are all conveyed by her with a simple, powerful yet sweet voice.
She once shared: "I was born right here in the Red River Delta. That delta characteristic is deeply ingrained in every cell of my body, in my voice, my singing, and my manner of behaving. My homeland and the soldiers are the sources that nourish my artistic soul." This heartfelt statement explains why, whenever Nhat Thuan sings, the audience clearly feels her intense love for her homeland and the heroic spirit of Hai Phong.
For the past 30 years, in her green military uniform, Lieutenant Colonel Nhat Thuan has followed in the footsteps of soldiers to every corner of the country. From remote border regions to frontline islands, she sings to serve her compatriots and comrades, giving strength to those who guard the skies and seas of our homeland day and night.

Throughout her career, Lieutenant Colonel, People's Artist Nhat Thuan has brought numerous prestigious awards to the Military Region 3 Performing Arts Troupe. These include the coveted Gold Medals at the All-Army Professional Performing Arts Festivals (2008, 2014, 2018), and the Silver Medal at the 5-Country Arts Festival (Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand) in 2016. She was awarded the title of Meritorious Artist by the Party and State in 2012, and was further promoted to People's Artist in 2024.
These prestigious awards are a well-deserved recognition of the tireless efforts of the artist and soldier. For People's Artist Nhat Thuan, the greatest and most invaluable reward is that his singing has touched the deepest corners of the souls of soldiers and audiences alike.
As the Head of the Choir, Lieutenant Colonel Nhat Thuan not only stands under the spotlight, but also serves as a commander, a keeper of the flame, passing on the passion for the profession and guiding countless generations of young artists in the troupe. She is responsible for preparing performances, ensuring a balance between artistic value and mission in major regional and military programs. Her calmness, humility, and perseverance are a solid source of moral support for the entire Military Region 3 Performing Arts Troupe.
As an artist who has experienced many ups and downs, from a seamstress to a commanding officer with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and the highest honor of Vietnamese artists, Nhat Thuan has always maintained a pure and unwavering spirit as she was in the beginning.
"I always say that the profession chose me, not that I chose the profession," she shared.
Perhaps it was that serendipitous encounter, along with the traditions of her homeland, that shaped People's Artist Nhat Thuan into the person she is today – a golden voice, brimming with passion for each song. Regardless of her role, she always sings with all her heart, dedicating her voice and songs to her homeland.
Amidst the bustling life of Hai Phong city today, the voice of People's Artist Nhat Thuan still resonates with pride. She is truly a blazing phoenix flower, an outstanding daughter who brings glory to the music of Hai Phong and the artists of the Vietnam People's Army.
