On May 16th, singer Miu Le was charged and detained by the Investigation Police Agency (Hai Phong City Police) for "Organizing the illegal use of narcotics." Following this, on May 20th, Ho Chi Minh City Police announced the dismantling of a large drug trafficking ring, charging and detaining 71 suspects.
Among these, two names that shocked the public were singers Long Nhật and Sơn Ngọc Minh. The fact that singers who were once idols of young people are repeatedly involved with drugs has caused considerable public concern.
Artists are inherently influential figures in society, especially among young people. A single outfit they wear, a single statement they make, or even their behavior can quickly become a trend. However, recently, some of these "idols" have appeared in the media handcuffed and in tears at the police station.
Regarding the reasons leading to drug-related offenses, some argue that the nature of their work often involves artists working at night, experiencing psychological pressure, and easily falling into states of loneliness and emotional deprivation.
The complex environment they are exposed to also makes them targets for those involved in decadent lifestyles. Without strong character, artists can easily fall into temptation. However, this cannot be a reason to justify breaking the law.
Artists are public figures. Having received affection, fame, and income from society, artists have a responsibility to maintain their image and professional ethics.
First and foremost is a sense of respect for the law. Before becoming famous, they must be good citizens. In addition, there is a responsibility to their fans, as the majority of young artists' audiences today are teenagers. The deviant lifestyles of artists can negatively impact the perceptions and behavior of young people.
Currently, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has issued a Code of Conduct for those working in the arts. This code sets out standards for the behavior of artists in social life, professional activities, journalism, media, and cyberspace.
However, relying solely on ethical recommendations is insufficient to deter wrongdoing. What is missing is a sufficiently robust mechanism for enforcement, monitoring, and accountability.
Building a healthy cultural and artistic environment free from vice requires the joint efforts of the entire community. Most importantly, it requires self-discipline, maintaining reputation, and upholding the rule of law.
When artists value their profession and are fully aware of their responsibilities to the public, evils like drug abuse will no longer have the opportunity to "knock on their door," destroying their lives and careers.
