Along with iOS 26.2.1, Apple just released an update for devices running iOS 12 in the early hours of January 27th (Vietnam time), 8 years after this version was first released.
Devices that can run iOS 12 up to this date include the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, and the 6th generation iPod touch.
According to MacRumors , this means that with iOS 12.5.8, Apple continues to support software for devices released more than 10 years ago, especially the iPhone 5s (13 years old) and iPhone 6 (12 years old).
The iPhone 5s was released in September 2013, while the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were launched in September 2014. Devices supporting iOS 12.5.8 were also released between 2013 and 2015.
According to Apple, iOS 12.5.8 renews the necessary certificates for features such as iMessage, FaceTime, and device activation. After this update, key features on the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 will continue to work beyond January 2027.
Initially, features tied to certificate expiration dates would stop working when the certificate expired. However, with this update, users can now confidently use these essential features on older iPhone models for years to come.
Prior to iOS 12.5.8, the most recent software update for the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 was released in January 2023, including security patches.
According to its commitment, Apple provides security updates for iPhones for a minimum of five years from the date of release. However, in practice, the company usually supports devices for a longer period.
For example, the iPhone 6s, released 11 years ago, still receives security patches, most recently in September 2025 via iOS 15.8.5. The device also recently received iOS 15.8.6, renewing certificates for key features.
New versions of iOS 18 and iOS 16 were also released for devices still running these operating systems, with version numbers iOS 16.7.13 and iOS 18.7.4, respectively.
For iOS 26.2.1, the update primarily supports the second-generation AirTag item finder accessory along with some bug fixes. Apple also released iOS 26.3 beta 3, adding a new tool to switch between iPhone and Android, support for sending notifications from iPhone to third-party smartwatches, and some tweaks to the Weather app.
