Special durian garden

Growing durian for year-round harvest was once considered impossible, because the biological characteristics of this tree only produce fruit seasonally.

However, Mr. Thuan, a 9x generation farmer, surprised many people when he succeeded with the organic durian growing model, with high productivity and harvest almost all year round.

Mr. Bui Dinh Thuan, Dak Nia commune, Gia Nghia city ( Dak Nong ) adjusts the amount of nutrients appropriately, ensuring the tree grows stably and bears fruit all year round.

The owner of this unique model used to study architecture but because of his passion for agriculture , he turned to gardening. He is passionate about researching and studying how to grow and care for plants in an organic way.

Mr. Thuan said that since 2018, his family has started intercropping durian with coffee, cashew, mangosteen and lychee on an area of 6 hectares. This multi-cropping solution helps him make the most of soil and climate conditions and increase income.

In Mr. Thuan’s durian garden, each tree can be clearly seen in all stages of growth, from new flowers, young fruits, growing fruits to even old fruits that are about to ripen. Thanks to that, durian harvesting takes place almost all year round instead of just focusing on the main season as usual.

Mr. Bui Dinh Thuan is passionate about clean agriculture and has techniques for taking care of organic durian to produce fruit all year round.

“From the fourth year onwards, the durian garden began to produce fruit continuously. It is important that we take the initiative in nutrition, watering and proper care techniques so that the tree does not become exhausted,” Mr. Thuan shared.

Currently, he is managing about 500 durian trees that are yielding stable harvests. The durian garden mainly grows famous varieties such as Monthong and Ri6.

On average, each durian tree yields about 1.4 quintals of fruit per year, equivalent to more than 40 - 45 fruits, with an average weight of 3kg/fruit.

Secret to keeping plants healthy and fruit delicious

Not following the agricultural method of using chemicals to force plants to produce fruit, Mr. Thuan chose the path of organic farming, following nature.

This is also the secret to helping his durian garden produce sustainable fruit, without crop failure, loss of strength or reduced productivity after each harvest.

The main source of fertilizer used by Mr. Thuan is organic compost from fish protein, bean protein, and silkworm manure. These materials are easy to find, environmentally friendly, and especially suitable for long-term farming conditions.

“I don’t force the tree to bear fruit, but create conditions for it to grow naturally. If there are flowers, it will bear fruit, and when the fruit is ripe, it will ripen on its own. The tree doesn’t have to work hard, but the fruit is still even and delicious,” he said.

Thanks to following a methodical care process, Mr. Thuan's durian always has a rich sweetness, sticky rice, characteristic aroma and is absolutely safe for consumers.

This is also the factor that helps his products always be in a state of "out of stock". Mr. Thuan creates a large consumer market through the form of pre-ordering and home delivery.

His regular customers come from many provinces and big cities such as Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi , Da Nang, Hai Phong...

Mr. Thuan introduced durian and vegetables and fruits produced according to GlobalGAP standards at the Agricultural Fair and Supply-Demand Connection in the Central Highlands - Dak Nong region held in April 2025 in Gia Nghia City.

“I only sell durian that has fallen off its own, not cut green. Customers are used to it and really like the rich, sweet taste but not too hard. The price ranges from 80,000 to 100,000 VND/kg but there is still not enough to deliver,” said Mr. Thuan.

Every day, despite being busy, Mr. Thuan still personally checks each flower cluster and each young durian fruit to adjust the appropriate amount of nutrients, ensuring the tree grows stably.

Currently, he has planted more than 700 durian trees of the DoNa, Ri6 and Musang King varieties. The newly planted durian trees are in their second year and growing well.

In a context where consumers are increasingly concerned about the quality and origin of agricultural products, this model shows the great potential of organic agriculture, especially for high-value crops such as durian.

From the creativity and enthusiasm of a young person, it once again affirms that with the right approach, Dak Nong agriculture can completely grow strongly, creating a brand for high-quality agricultural products in the domestic and international markets.
