Superman without a cape

BPO - When we think of superheroes, we often picture characters with extraordinary abilities, who help those in need and shoulder the responsibility of maintaining world peace in Hollywood movies. However, for my family, superheroes exist in real life. The only difference is that "Superman Dad" doesn't have a cape or superpowers like Spider-Man or Batman. Instead, he has a love for his family that is stronger than any miracle.

Back then, repairing a motorbike was a source of pride, let alone those huge vehicles. So, those bulky Kamaz trucks or bulldozers, in the eyes of a little girl like me, were like monsters from a movie. Yet my father could take those giant monsters apart and put them back together perfectly, even though the tools and equipment weren't as modern as they are now. If that wasn't superheroy, then what was?

The superheroes in the movies always appear in capes, while my dad, the superhero, always wore a thick, hot, and often greasy suit. Yet, he said: "That's my favorite suit because it can protect my family." When I was little, I didn't understand the deeper meaning of his words; I just thought it was like the extraordinary suit of a superhero giving him extraordinary abilities to do everything.

My father didn't have magical hands that could make things appear in an instant; he only had calloused hands, scarred both large and small, from protecting and supporting our family. He handled everything, big or small, heavy or light, to ease the burden on his wife and children. Never shying away from sun or rain, he was always patient and diligent in his work as a teacher and deeply responsible to his family. I never once saw him show signs of fatigue or discouragement; his gaze was always one of enthusiasm and hope.

While the fathers of our neighboring families always arrived home on time, my father was always the last to get home. He'd rush home, quickly eat a bowl of rice, and before the sweat on his shoulders had even dried, he'd continue working. Persistent and tireless, rain or shine, he quietly went about his work.

Besides his main job as an auto repair instructor, my father could do almost anything. Whenever neighbors needed help, he'd be there immediately. From fixing a broken water pump, repairing the house, paving the yard, clearing the garden, planting trees… he never hesitated to do anything. And then there were the toys he skillfully assembled, transforming discarded items into unique toys that always fascinated my younger brother and me.

Although he didn't have superpowers, whenever we needed him, he was always there to protect and support us. He taught us: "Even torn paper must retain its edges," and to be polite and kind. He showed us how to overcome difficulties and encouraged us when things weren't going well. He didn't tell us fairy tales, but stories about the heroic sacrifices of many martyrs, including my great-grandfather. The family traditions and the ideals of a Party member are things my father has always upheld throughout the years. These stories have been passed on to his children. On the day he received his 40-year Party membership badge, seeing his eyes redden with emotion, my heart swelled with pride for this superhuman.

Not only is my father capable of doing everything, but he also has the ability to be immune to pain. For over 40 years, I've never heard him complain, even though his skin has been injured countless times requiring dozens of stitches. This invisible ability has kept our family's superhero strong and resilient, no matter what pain he faces. Yet, on the day my grandfather passed away, my father's shoulders trembled and silent tears streamed down his cheeks, making me want to hug him and comfort him. At that moment, I realized that even superheroes have moments of vulnerability. And I know that every superhero needs to be loved.

Although Dad never said "I love you" in words, we are always grateful to be his children, for the silent sacrifices he made for our family. We know he doesn't have any superpowers; it's his boundless love for his family that makes him strong. He doesn't need a cape or glory; all he wants is for us to live happily.

Years have passed, and Dad's hair has turned gray with age. I know now is the time for my sisters and me to hug and share lots of joy with that superhero. Thank you so much, Dad!
