Students were 'ridiculed' for using AI, what did FPT University say?

On the afternoon of August 31, Mr. Bui Quang Hung, Director of FPT Polytechnic College, confirmed and said that the incident happened on August 10 at the Ho Chi Minh City campus.

After submitting the exam for the subject Color, Graphic Design major, NKL student GD1807 received a score of 0 from lecturer MD with the reason "using AI, not being able to edit the exam according to the lecturer's instructions, resulting in the exam quality being no different from the previous exam quality".

Notably, after students questioned their scores in the class chat group, the lecturer exchanged messages and criticized the way the test was done.

Then NKL's parents reported the incident and asked the school to re-evaluate the quality of the teachers and have a response before August 19.

Two days later, the school set up a review board to review the students' test and concluded that the test scored 5 points. At the review meeting, the students expressed their satisfaction with the new results.

On August 21, the MD lecturer directly met and apologized to the NKL student, admitting that there were inappropriate messages within the class when criticizing the student. However, the parents did not approve of the method of meeting the student privately to resolve the issue, and requested that the lecturer apologize in the class group.

On the same day, the lecturer sent a message to the class group with the specific content: "I congratulate KL on successfully defending the subject. During the teaching process, I had behaviors that caused misunderstandings and made KL sad. I apologize and hope you regain your motivation, learning spirit and continue studying." However, according to Mr. Hung, because KL had left the group before, he did not see the message.

The leader also affirmed that the school will not “cover up” if lecturers and staff have inappropriate or substandard behavior. In this incident, the MD lecturer’s actions towards KL were not insulting, but were inappropriate criticism in both emotion and reason.

Mr. Bui Quang Hung admitted that this was an undesirable incident, and FPT High School will learn from it. At the same time, the school has worked privately with the lecturer to review, learn from experience, and reach an agreement to terminate the labor contract with the lecturer, effective August 28.

Regarding the parents' request to provide personal information of lecturers, the Director of FPT Polytechnic College emphasized that it is impossible to respond because the school has the responsibility and obligation to comply with the principle of protecting personal information.

"I confirm that the lecturer has full qualifications and certificates according to regulations and has passed the recruitment process of FPT College," Mr. Hung added.
