BGR reports that Apple is considering allowing iPhone users in the European Union (EU) to replace Siri with a third-party virtual assistant. It’s unclear which chatbots could replace Siri, but Gemini is the most likely candidate.
In fact, Google itself is transitioning Google Assistant to Gemini in 2024. This AI chatbot has now replaced Google Assistant on Android phones and is expanding to all devices running Google software, including watches, cars, TVs, and Android XR smart glasses.
The report also doesn’t say what level of access Apple will grant to third-party assistants. Right now, Siri can handle app access to create calendar events, send messages, and control smart home devices. While it’s not always accurate, the virtual assistant can interact with many iPhone apps.
A similar level of access could be expected for Gemini if it were allowed to replace Siri. However, another possible scenario is that Gemini would be restricted and only display information from Google apps.
Also according to BGR , switching from Siri to a third-party AI assistant is much more complicated than swapping the Mail or Maps app for Gmail or Google Maps.
While Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Meta are constantly making breakthroughs in AI, Apple is standing still. Siri is increasingly outdated, AI features are delayed, and the company is internally confused about its development strategy. This silent crisis could seriously threaten Apple's position in the coming years.
Bloomberg sources say Apple is divided internally over the importance and direction of AI. While CEO Tim Cook sees it as a “long-term priority,” other senior executives, such as Vice President Craig Federighi, are reluctant to invest heavily in the field. Federighi appears to be sticking to the traditional approach to software development, which prioritizes slowness, tight control, and stability.
