The incident occurred in the final minutes of The Strongest's 3-2 victory over Blooming in the Bolivian Championship on August 4th, but details of the event have only now been released.
Specifically, during injury time of the aforementioned match, The Strongest fans threw flares (known as "llorona," which are known for their ability to fly through the air like missiles) onto the pitch, creating a chaotic scene.
Fans in the stadium and players from both teams had to flee to avoid injury. However, striker Juan Godoy – who scored the winning goal in the 3-2 victory for The Strongest – was not so lucky.
Juan Godoy didn't have time to react to the chaos before he was hit by a llorona firework thrown by a fan. The striker fell to the ground clutching his genitals. After receiving medical attention, he was carried off the pitch in pain.
Reports in Bolivia's El Deber newspaper indicate that Godoy suffered first-degree burns to his thigh and a hematoma in the testicular area.
The Strongest's UltraSur group is believed to be responsible for the incident. Bolivian media suspect that The Strongest fans used the fireworks to express their protest against the club's owners.
However, UltraSur denied this information, stating that they fired the fireworks to celebrate and had apologized to Godoy. The group also announced that they would find the culprit and "not light fireworks in future matches."
