Diverse playgrounds
In the early days of summer, the atmosphere at the Bac Giang Chess Club (Bac Giang Ward) is vibrant with activity. In a spacious room with dozens of neatly arranged chessboards, the children intently observe each piece, enthusiastically calculating their moves. Some are just learning the basic moves, while many others have already participated in provincial and regional tournaments.

Coach Hoang Van Ngoc, in charge of the club, said: “Chess not only helps develop logical thinking, memory, and concentration, but also cultivates perseverance, resilience, and problem-solving skills, which is why it is increasingly popular among young children. This summer, the club attracted more than 100 students of various ages. To accommodate the large number of students, the coaching staff divided them into many classes according to skill level and age. The lessons not only focus on technical instruction but also include practical competitions, creating an environment for interaction to make the children even more enthusiastic.”

Besides chess, football is also a popular sport among children during the summer. In the afternoons, the training ground of the Bac Ninh FC Community Football Center (Que Vo ward) is always filled with the laughter and cheers of young trainees. Under the early summer sun, groups enthusiastically practice dribbling, passing, and tactical coordination under the guidance of their coaches.
According to Mr. Ngo Van Long, Director of the Center, after more than two years of operation with a special curriculum developed by the senior advisor of Bac Ninh Football Club - coach Park Hang-seo, the community football course is always eagerly awaited by children in the area during the summer. Besides teaching football skills, the center focuses on educating discipline, teamwork skills, and organizes football festivals to give children opportunities to gain experience, increase confidence, and foster a love for the "king of sports".
Besides large sports centers, in many localities, small-scale summer sports classes are effectively maintained following the model of family clubs, neighborhood groups, or community groups. At the Yen Phong Commune Cultural Center, the commune's athletics club welcomes hundreds of young people registering to participate in training. More than just a place for sports training, the club also serves as an environment for educating willpower and discipline in many local youth. Here, the children are given the opportunity to train completely free of charge. Those with talent and passion are nurtured and trained to participate in cross-country and athletics competitions organized by the province and various sectors.
One of the familiar sports activity spots for children in Hai Muoi village (Luc Nam commune) during the summer is the family table tennis club of Mr. Pham Van Kieu. Here, the coaches are members of Mr. Kieu's family, and the main training area is a large, covered courtyard equipped with standard table tennis tables.
“My greatest wish is to create a healthy playground, helping children have an environment for physical activity and avoid becoming addicted to phones and video games… Many children who train here have developed good skills, participated in competitions and won awards at student sports tournaments and local amateur competitions. This motivates my family to continue providing free table tennis lessons and encourage children to come and train more regularly,” said Mr. Pham Van Kieu.
Create a training environment for children.
Beyond simply being summer sports classes, playgrounds for children throughout the province demonstrate the active participation of the entire community in caring for the mental and physical well-being of children. With the attention of all levels of government and local authorities, the system of sports playgrounds for children during the summer is becoming increasingly diverse.
Many sports centers have invested in modern facilities and opened additional talent classes with a variety of sports. Community clubs and sports groups in residential areas are also regularly maintained, creating opportunities for children to participate in training close to where they live.

Notably, many of these initiatives have been formed through the voluntary contributions of citizens, sports enthusiasts, and parents. From a few table tennis tables set up in yards, a badminton court in a residential area, or free football coaching sessions for children, many locations have gradually become familiar sports venues every summer. In addition, most localities are focusing on renovating sports fields and utilizing cultural centers and public playgrounds to organize sports activities for children.
Mr. Nguyen Van Anh, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, assessed: “Maintaining and expanding community sports playgrounds not only cares for the spiritual and physical well-being of children but also provides an environment for discovering and nurturing talented individuals for high-performance sports, contributing to the cohesion and building of a healthy cultural life in residential areas. When adults show concern and participate, each training ground becomes an open community space for children to improve their health and cultivate their passion for sports.”
A vibrant and meaningful summer doesn't need expensive or grandiose programs; sometimes it starts with small neighborhood sports fields or simple sports classes. It is from these playgrounds that children have the opportunity to develop holistically, form an active lifestyle, and nurture their future athletic dreams.
