At the upcoming mid-year regular session of the Hai Phong City People's Council in 2026, the Council is expected to consider and give opinions on the draft plan for naming roads, streets, and public works in Hai Phong City. This issue is attracting the attention of voters and the city's residents, especially those in localities with roads, streets, and public works to be named.
According to the draft plan, the City People's Committee has proposed naming 33 newly opened roads and existing residential roads in 11 merged wards. The western area includes Chu Van An ward; the eastern area includes 10 wards, mainly newly converted communes, namely An Hai, An Phong, Bach Dang, Thuy Nguyen, Hong An, etc.
The City People's Committee proposed naming 65 streets, mainly in the newly established wards mentioned above. An Hai ward has 20 streets, An Phong ward has 7 streets, Bach Dang ward has 2 streets, Chu Van An ward has 2 streets, Do Son ward has 1 street, Hong An ward has 6 streets... Three public works were also proposed for naming: Ha Doan and Xam Bo flower gardens (Dong Hai ward) and Hai Thanh flower garden (Duong Kinh ward).
Naming new roads and streets, or old residential roads, especially in newly merged wards, is essential. Compared to the former wards, the current wards are 3-4 times larger. Given the unique characteristics of newly established wards, many new roads have been invested in, and many old roads in residential areas remain unnamed, making it difficult for local authorities to manage and facilitate transactions and transportation for residents.
During recent meetings with constituents and representatives of the People's Council at all levels, local residents repeatedly proposed and requested that the city promptly research and name the roads and streets in the area, to avoid the situation where, even after being upgraded to a ward, there are still "houses without numbers and streets without names".
Taking into account the opinions and aspirations of voters, the draft proposal for naming new roads and streets has been directed by the City People's Committee to relevant departments and units for careful research and consideration, ensuring compliance with regulations and suitability to local culture.
According to the draft, the names chosen for the roads and streets are all associated with famous landmarks, talented and virtuous individuals who made significant contributions to the formation and development of the locality; and have typical historical and cultural significance and value for that locality. Many names have been commonly used since ancient times and are deeply ingrained in the consciousness of the local people.
With a two-tiered local government system, familiar old village and commune names are not lost or forgotten when selected for naming new roads and streets. This fulfills the aspirations of local people. From this, it contributes to educating the younger generation about traditional culture, fostering love for their homeland and pride, and becoming a unique hallmark of each locality and region.
Naming streets and roads not only fulfills the aspirations of the people but also contributes to meeting the criteria of a modern city, demonstrating the increasing development and expansion of Hai Phong. Through each street and road name, the traditional cultural and historical values of the "heroic port city - a land of culture and civilization" are further promoted and spread.
With that in mind, voters and city residents hope that the draft plan will be approved by the City People's Council at its regular mid-year session in 2026 and implemented soon. The street and road name signs will include QR codes for information lookup, allowing residents and tourists to learn more about the origin and historical value of the place names.
