Volunteers in Dinh Lap district register to donate tissues and organs.

On June 7th, following a traffic accident, Mr. NTA, 28 years old, from Hoang Dong commune, Lang Son city, unfortunately passed away. Despite their grief, his family performed a noble act by agreeing to donate his organs to help patients in need of organ transplants prolong their lives.

Dr. Nguyen Huu Hoang, Director of the Eye Bank at the Central Eye Hospital, said: "Immediately after receiving the information, we moved and arrived on-site to receive the organ. That noble gesture from the family contributed to bringing sight to two other patients just a few days later."

According to the Provincial Red Cross Society, this is the first case in the province where a family donated organs after a death. Donating corneas in particular, and tissues and organs in general, helps patients have a better chance of living, seeing the light, and contributes to spreading love and compassion.

Currently, the province has over 600 people registered to donate tissues and organs (an increase of over 400 people compared to 2022).

Although organ and tissue donation is a noble act, mobilizing people to participate is not easy due to customs and traditions. Therefore, from 2019 to the present, the Provincial Red Cross Society has issued documents guiding all levels of the organization to promote the significance of organ and tissue donation to raise community awareness. Simultaneously, in coordination with the National Coordination Center for Organ Transplantation and medical facilities, the police force, schools, etc., they have organized seminars, training sessions, and integrated the promotion of organ and tissue donation registration into programs, campaigns, and events related to voluntary blood donation. They have also shown short documentaries to encourage people to register for organ and tissue donation. From 2020 to the present, all levels of the organization have coordinated over 20 awareness campaigns with more than 5,000 participants on the content and significance of organ and tissue donation.

Ms. Nong Bich Thuan, Chairwoman of the Provincial Red Cross Society, said: "Besides directing the Red Cross branches at all levels to strengthen propaganda, we also invited speakers from the National Coordination Center for Organ Transplantation to exchange and share experiences in propaganda and mobilization. At the same time, the society proactively coordinated with units and sectors to disseminate information among cadres and Party members."

Mr. Hoang Xuan Truong, Deputy Director of the Department of Health, said: "In recent times, the department has actively implemented many activities to raise awareness among medical staff and people in the province about organ and tissue donation. In addition, we organize training sessions and integrate awareness campaigns into patient activities, especially encouraging doctors and nurses, those directly caring for patients, to be pioneers in registering to donate organs and tissues after death to spread humanitarian values throughout the entire sector."

Thanks to the active involvement of the Provincial Red Cross Society, as well as the support and cooperation of relevant departments and units, the province now has more than 600 people registered to donate tissues and organs (an increase of more than 400 people compared to 2022).

Hoang Nam Long, a student at the Provincial College of Health Sciences, said: "I participate in the school's voluntary blood donation club. While in the club, my friends and I were educated by the Provincial Red Cross Society about donating tissues and organs to save lives. Through this, I understood the significance of this act, so in 2023, I registered to donate tissues and organs to help patients prolong their lives."

With the joint efforts of all levels and sectors, and the positive response of the people, it is believed that organ and tissue donation activities in the province will continue to develop sustainably, becoming a widespread humanitarian movement, contributing to extending the lives of those who remain.

In the coming period, the associations at all levels will strengthen coordination with departments, agencies, and organizations to promote propaganda through various vivid forms; and replicate exemplary examples of individuals registering and donating tissues and organs. At the same time, they will focus on commending, rewarding, and showing gratitude to families and individuals who donate tissues and organs to spread the spirit of sharing and compassion in the community…
