Dengue fever:

Dengue fever in Vietnam is developing unpredictably, with a sudden surge in cases, shortened outbreak cycles, and the disease no longer following normal patterns. The health sector advises people to remain vigilant and absolutely not be complacent or negligent in disease prevention and control.

The number of cases is increasing, and the cycle is getting shorter.

According to the Ministry of Health , since the beginning of the year, the whole country has recorded more than 50,000 cases of dengue fever, including 5 deaths. Notably, the number of cases in the first months of 2026 increased 2.5 times compared to the same period last year, indicating that the disease is developing in a complex manner and tends to break out earlier than usual.

Explaining this sudden increase, Deputy Director of the Department of Disease Prevention (Ministry of Health ) Vo Hai Son said that dengue fever is gradually breaking the old patterns, with outbreak cycles becoming shorter and shorter. Typically, in 2025, the number of cases increased again but did not decrease at the end of the year as usual, instead remaining high in November and December.

Furthermore, the hot, humid weather interspersed with prolonged rain from the beginning of 2026 until now has created favorable conditions for the Aedes mosquito to thrive. In addition, the dominance of the DENV-2 serotype is also a reason for the increase in severe cases and hospitalizations.

Dr. Angela Pratt, Head of the World Health Organization (WHO) Representative Office in Vietnam, stated that there are three core factors making dengue fever a global threat: climate change, rapid urbanization in densely populated areas leading to inadequate infrastructure, and the increasingly unpredictable nature of the disease.

Referring to the severity of this disease, Deputy Director of the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology Tran Nhu Duong stated that in the past 50 years, the number of dengue fever cases globally has increased 30-fold. Each year, the world records between 50 and 100 million cases and approximately 24,000 deaths. 2026 also marks the 16th consecutive year that ASEAN countries will organize activities in response to ASEAN Dengue Prevention and Control Day to strengthen international coordination in disease prevention and control.

As a densely populated urban area with significant population fluctuations, numerous construction sites, and housing for workers and students, Hanoi is one of the localities at high risk of dengue outbreaks. According to the Hanoi Center for Disease Control (CDC), from the beginning of 2026 to the present, the city has recorded 337 cases in 93 wards and communes, an increase compared to the same period in 2025 (282 cases). Although no complex outbreaks have been recorded, the Hanoi health sector believes that the disease still poses a potential risk of increasing in the coming months. Therefore, the Hanoi CDC continues to monitor areas where dengue fever cases have been recorded in Cau Giay and Dai Mo wards and Lien Minh and Dan Hoa communes.

Take proactive action "early and from afar".

Commending Hanoi for its proactive and early implementation of disease prevention and control activities, especially communication, environmental sanitation, and community mobilization to eliminate mosquito larvae and pupae since May, Deputy Director of the Central Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology Tran Nhu Duong stated that, to effectively control the epidemic, Hanoi's health sector has identified a "three-legged stool" model: the health sector strengthening training and technical supervision; local authorities playing a leading role in directing and mobilizing inter-sectoral efforts; and simultaneously raising the awareness and responsibility of each household.

According to Deputy Director of the Hanoi CDC, Dao Huu Than, the strongest "fortress" in the prevention and control of dengue fever is still the awareness of each individual citizen. The most effective and sustainable measure is to proactively eliminate mosquitoes and mosquito larvae daily in living areas.

Furthermore, given the unpredictable nature of dengue fever outbreaks and the simultaneous circulation of multiple virus strains, which increases the risk of severe reinfection, the application of science and technology is expected to create a new breakthrough towards the WHO's goal of eliminating dengue-related deaths by 2030. According to Dr. Angela Pratt, Vietnam has licensed a dengue fever vaccine and is preparing to conduct a pilot program to assess its feasibility before considering its inclusion in the Expanded Immunization Program.

However, the health sector also noted that vaccines and AI-powered early warning tools cannot replace but only supplement traditional mosquito and larva control measures, creating a comprehensive "shield" for disease prevention.

With the message "No mosquito larvae, no dengue fever," the Ministry of Health urges every citizen to spend at least 10 minutes each week checking and covering water containers, turning over unused items, and maintaining the habit of sleeping under mosquito nets. If experiencing a high fever lasting more than two days, people should immediately go to a medical facility for examination and absolutely not attempt self-treatment at home.
