Now, archaeologists from the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Polish Academy of Sciences , while excavating a burial mound in the Dobruja region of Romania, have discovered that, in ancient times, grave robbers had buried a wolf skull above ground on the mound as a way to ward off evil spirits and protect themselves from the deceased. Dr. Bartłomiej Szymon Szmoniewski from the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Polish Academy of Sciences said: "Perhaps it was a spiritual trick performed by ancient antiquities poachers to prevent the escape of spirits from the tombs, as well as to prevent the spirits' revenge when these tombs were looted by thieves." According to Dr. Szmoniewski, the tomb was likely looted by the Getae, a tribe related to the Thracians who once lived in areas along both sides of the Danube River. Photo: @V. Voine/Science in Poland.
